Vertex success down to teamwork
Vertex Engineers won first place for the Fastest Growing Manufacturing Business in New Zealand in the Deloitte Fast 50 National Awards.

For Vertex Engineers Ltd, striking gold at the Deloitte Fast 50 Awards was a tribute to the people who made it all happen.
Winning first place for the Fastest Growing Manufacturing Business in the Central North Island, Vertex Engineers went on to secure first place at the national level and third place overall on the Deloitte Fast 50 Index for 2018.
Founder and managing director of Vertex Engineers, Nick Callagher says that after winning the awards he went to work and called the whole team together in the foyer.
“There were about 30 people there and I had these awards in my hands. The look on their faces just blew me away and that’s when I really got excited. That’s what it’s all about—it’s the team recognition. I said to them; ‘this is individually, collectively all you—it’s Vertex and this is what you guys have achieved.”
It is always about the people and Vertex live and breath that philosophy, creating a culture where people look forward to coming to work.
“It’s a great environment where people can express their skills, contribute to the team, work with clients, provide good solutions and enjoy doing it,” says Daniel King, Vertex’s financial operations manager.
The team culture forged by Vertex Engineers fits perfectly with Nick’s vision for the business when he established it in 2011.
“I wanted to do projects with a difference and bring people and relationships on a journey by valuing them—not just treat people as work. Our reputation is all about design innovation and engineering excellence. We’ve developed a reputation for being good to work with and when we’ve finished the job we ensure it’s working well for our customer.”
Adding to the conversation, Vertex’s general manager, Eric Wisse, says that reputation really starts with the reputation you have with one another.
“The internal reputation oozes out externally. We don’t take it for granted that we’re going to have a
good external reputation unless we put the effort in internally to have that right dynamic with our people.”
With offices in Hamilton, Tauranga and Auckland, Vertex Engineers operates throughout New Zealand focusing in three key markets: materials handling, food and beverage and water & waste water.
Across those three areas, a highly skilled and professional team includes mechanical, process, automation and electrical, chemical and environmental engineers along with expertise in project management, construction, health and safety and business management. “We’re all about people and growth,” says Nick.
“The business is built on a team. We value people and do a personal development program for all our people about three times a year. We want our people to grow as individuals and in their roles. That also has a huge impact on who we attract into the business.”
Always prepared to hold ‘brave conversations’ with the team either motivational or developmental, Eric says, Vertex is equally prepared to hold brave conversations externally.
“We had a conversation with a client recently where we suggested a different technology that would give them a better outcome. The client had time to think about it and agreed, leading to a highly successful project.” It is always about the people.
