Alistair Macrae who jointly owns and operates Versatile Homes and Buildings North Canterbury with his wife Nicky Rowley, says the show home has been listed at $741,000 with the house alone valued at $546,000.
He says the home is perfect example of the building company’s ability to use a wide range of materials, customising the build to suit the customers’ individual needs and preferences. Alistair and Nicky have owned the North Canterbury franchise since 2010 and have an excellent understanding of the local market.
Originally building homes in Queenstown, Alistair shifted to Christchurch 24 years ago and established a relationship with Versatile Homes, building garages for the company until he and Nicky were offered the opportunity of buying the North Canterbury franchise.
Alistair says his trade background has been vital in understanding the building process, being able to talk customers through the various steps and detect critical omissions.
“I project manage the builds, regularly travelling around the various building sites. I’m also the one, along with our sales rep, who keeps in touch with the client throughout the build process.
“I’m really enjoying the business and it’s good to see the smile on peoples’ faces when you do a good job. We don’t regard the job as finished until the client is happy.”
Nicky looks after the administration side of the business, while sales rep Aaron Strong- born and bred in Rangiora – works with customers, customising one of the many template plans to suit their needs and preferences before sending it off to Versatile’s in-house architectural drafting team.

Alistair says the business covers a wide area with the full range of new builds from rural buildings to garages to urban residential homes.
“We go up to the Hunderleas, Springs Junction and across to Arthur’s Pass in terms of our geographic reach,” says Alistair.
“We usually have about 30 builds on the go at any one time in various stages, from going through the consent process to completion.”
He says gone are the days when there was limited choice in home design and the materials used. “These days we can build any home that the customer wants.
“We have a range of about 40 plans that the customer can choose from and these can all be customized. “There is nothing that is set in stone.”
