A new 235sqm show home is taking Versatile New Plymouth to another level, as it expands from its proven steel-clad garaging and minor dwellings aimed towards first home buyers and downsizers, into the upper end of the housing market.
The show home on the corner of Keene Drive and Papawhero Drive in the Twin Lakes Development, opened on November 2. Versatile New Plymouth owners Maree Gush and Mike Bishell took a four-bedroom Sheppard design from Versatile’s Family range and modified it to suit their site and to allow for its use as a show home.
Sitting slightly elevated and oriented to the north on its 800sqm corner site, this home really stands out.
Its simple grey brick cladding is complemented with sections of BCG Duragroove fibre-cement panel, painted in a rich cedar shade and giving a warm accent to the cool grey exterior. Inside the home, a designer style entry has the convenience and improved security of digital access.
Its 2.55m stud throughout and 2.7m boxed ceiling section in the dining/living area provide a sense of spaciousness, while a double skylight over the kitchen, Solatube skylights along the hallway, and a skylight in the ensuite let in natural light during the day.
The kitchen features a full scullery to one side and a gas-on-glass wok burner and complementary electric induction hob. Cavity slider doors can open or close the formal lounge to the living areas, and a sliding barn style door closes the hallway and bedrooms from the living areas.
The living area and master bedroom access sunny, timber decking and the shelter and privacy of the backyard, and the oversized double garage provides extra storage space.
The section’s landscaping, from the boulder retaining wall at the front to the tall fencing at the rear, showcases the advantage of Versatile New Plymouth’s one-stop-shop service. “Our main point of difference really is our service,” Maree says.
“We are a one-stop-shop, our clients only have to deal with us. We take care of all the building consents and subtrades, working towards our ultimate goal of making the whole experience easy and pleasant for our customers.”
This goal becomes more difficult to achieve as the business grows, but Maree and Mike have it firmly in their sights. Their business has grown since they bought the franchise in 2014 with the development of a display site at Hurlstone Drive last year.

The 1350sqm site is home to the Versatile New Plymouth office, which is based on the Versatile Aoraki plan an d at 110sqm, includes four office spaces. It is clad in Superclad Colorsteel and one side in Hardiplank to demonstrate different cladding options.
Customers can also view a double garage with attached 3m x 6m sleepout and display ensuite, a large 15m x 8m workshop with 3m stud, and a standard double garage.
The display site also includes a colour console to help people mix and match colour combinations, a full range of cladding options, and plan books to browse through. Maree and Mike’s team has grown from just the two of them in 2014 to now 15 full time staff.
Six of these work at the Versatile New Plymouth display site at Hurlstone Drive, while the balance are builders and tradespeople working on client builds. And the work of the team is award-winning.
Versatile New Plymouth won the national Versatile network’s Franchise Excellence Award in 2016, and for the past two years has been runner up in Versatile’s Franchise of the Year Award, just one point away from first place this year. Maree and Mike are looking forward to building on that success.
