Wanaka couple Jude and Grant Smith found a special way to say ‘thank you’ when Turnkey Homes completed their beautiful new home there in 2012 by offering to open it as a show home for the building firm.
Everything about the company, which was only a fledgling at that time, had impressed the couple to such an extent that Jude also pledged to promote the positive experience they’d had to a wider clientele. Today, she is Turnkey’s sales and marketing consultant.
The pride they felt in what Turnkey Homes and its founder Phil Smith had accomplished for them was affirmed when their home won a gold award in the 2012 Master Builder Awards. The story doesn’t end there.
In mid-March 2017, Jude and Grant moved into their second Turnkey Homes – at Grandview near Wanaka – and, once more, decided to share their gorgeous property as a show home.
Again, this 292sqm alpine-style house has been a showstopper in more ways than one for Turnkey after winning a 2018 Master Builder gold award and being named as a gold reserve finalist.
Described by the award judges as “simple, unpretentious elegance at its best”, the home fits seamlessly into the environment with natural cladding including bagged schist.
Living spaces are generously proportioned and sleekly modern. A sunroom off the dining area ensures an abundance of natural light in the main living and kitchen area.
Spectacular mountain views add to the feeling of expansiveness in the four bedroom, three bathroom dwelling. Outdoor living is catered for superbly well via three courtyards. What sets it apart for Jude and Grant, though, is Turnkey quality.
“It is a really good quality of finish,” Jude says. “People who come through often ask ‘what would you change?’ I can’t answer that because I don’t think there’s anything we’d change.”
Having their home double as a show home can sometimes be exhausting. When they opened to the public last Easter, they had something like 170 people go through over two or three days.
“It was crazy, but it’s worth it because people know what they’re seeing is a real home and it’s amazing how many have wound up becoming clients.”
Turnkey Homes does not offer set plans, preferring clients to decide what design they want. The company has strong connections with trusted local architects who can provide design guidance.
While the company has grown considerably in the Wanaka area since Jude and Grant first built with them, the fundamental experience remains the same: a smooth and easy process, with clients valued as individuals and made to feel welcome and respected. (That extends to out of town clients, who are kept up to speed with progress remotely and through key site visits).
Consistent quality, home after home, is the result. “We have a mix of people wanting to live here permanently or wanting a holiday home. Sometimes the holiday home is viewed as an eventual retirement home.
“Turnkey will build any size of quality home for people and they will also do the driveway and pathways so everything is done; it is literally ‘turn the key’ and move in.”
