This is the second time in less than a year that NZ Dairy had the opportunity to catch up with the Dondertmans, who contract milk a 270ha Dairy Holdings property, 18 kilometres south-west of Rolleston, mid-Canterbury.
Changes in staff took place in June, heralding in fresh opportunities for a new group of young people to acquire grounding farming skills, something the couple say, is their way of supporting the next generation to come into the industry well.
“Josh and I have always wanted to see those that work with us progress and achieve their farming goals. We see it as a privilege to provide opportunities at entry-level and we’ve worked hard to evolve the systems to support their pathway well,” Becs explains.
And with a new team, there’s been more focus and attention to detail, to get the team off to a good solid start.
Just as much, seeing people acquire skills and then move on, gives the Dondertman’s a good deal of satisfaction, knowing they’ve contributed to a world of possibilities for the next generation, keen to progress their own farming businesses.
“We have retained Matt, who is our student from the Dairy Training Next Generation programme.”
Becs stresses how much they enjoy having all-rounded people in the team.
“If they have the right attitude and a genuine
interest in gaining skills, then we will train them over time to do all the things, not just milking.
We know the well-rounded dairy farmer will progress through the ups and downs of building their careers, and if we’ve played a part, then that’s wonderful.”
Becs understands working in the sector can have an isolating potential and she stresses to the team that its important to join groups and get involved with local people off farm.
Looking after rearing the new-born calves each season, to the point where they leave the calf shed is her responsibility. Bec’s also works off-farm for No. 8 HR, a role she’s recently taken on and is thoroughly enjoying.
“My role is Capability and Wellbeing specialist, and its challenging and engaging, looking after recruitment, facilitation, coaching, leadership development and technology, so there’s plenty to keep me busy.”
Another interest is the ‘Surfing for Farmers’ charity, designed to encourage farmers to get off the farm, give surfing a go and enjoy some time not focussing on farm life.
“To both Josh and I it’s very important to have a good balance between farm and other interests that connect people together and provide positive social interaction. It’s all about maintaining a framework that values and supports our mental health.”
Josh is Deputy Chair of the National Rural Support Trust, a cause he is passionate about. He’s also taken on the role of Dairy Chair for Federated Farmers, Otago/Southland region.
When NZ Dairy spoke with Becs in October, mating was just about to get underway and will extend five weeks. This time of the year, there’s attention given to farm maintenance jobs, fencing, weed spraying and a general tidy up around the property.
“It hasn’t really been a fabulous growing season for us so far. We could do with a bit more sun.”
The couple’s pathway to farm ownership has been solidly thought through. This is their third
season on the farm and they now own 550 of the 1100 cows. Becs says farm ownership is open-ended but will be the next step.
“We’ll know when it is the right time and we’ll have a good look at what’s available.”
Meanwhile, with interests and work on and off the farm, both Becs and Josh, have plenty to focus on, with their young family.
“We’re very fortunate to be in this situation. The children enjoy an amazing life and we’re
surrounded by a wonderful community.”
