“Gibbons development project manager Simon Dobson says there were no major challenges that as a collective, the team could not overcome.”
The latest addition to Nelson’s city fringe is the new large format retail development on Vanguard Street, providing a bespoke solution for the Briscoe Group to move its Briscoes and Rebel Sports stores under the one roof.
Developed by Nelson-based Gibbons, the 12-month build was completed just as Covid-19 put New Zealand into lockdown.
Briscoes and Rebel sport opened the doors to their new stores under level 2, with a further grand opening under level 1.
The building comprises 4250sqm of retail and back of house on a 4000sqm site. The additional space was achieved by building over an adjacent open drain to provide the pedestrian access and floor area needed to unlock the development.
This approach also had ecological benefits with the health of the stream being improved by the actions of this development.
Gibbons development project manager Simon Dobson says there were no major challenges that as a collective, the team could not overcome.
“We look to our local subcontractors and consultants for their expertise,” he says.
“Their support is imperative to the delivery of any project, and again they were key to the success of this project, and we thank them for their input.”
He says Gibbons, its consultants, and the construction team from Gibbons Naylor are all proud of what has been achieved for Nelson city, and Gibbons takes its satisfaction from the fact that the Briscoe Group looked to to provide a bespoke solution.
Gibbons is a family-owned investment and development company with extensive experience in developing, along-with a diversified property portfolio spanning industrial, commercial, residential, and large format retail sectors.
It has completed new builds for national retailers including The Warehouse, K-Mart, New World, Countdown, Briscoes, Noel Leeming, PlaceMakers, ITM and Bidfood.
Gibbons added a further large format retail development to its portfolio in completing the new neighbourhood shopping centre Stoneridge in Mt Wellington, Auckland earlier in 2020.
The 10,400sqm development comprises 7758sqm of large format retail and 2642sqm of service, convenience, and food and beverage retail. Stoneridge is anchored by The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery, Noel Leeming, and Bed Bath and Beyond.
These are complemented by a range of shops, services, and a food and beverage precinct with extensive outdoor seating.
Gibbons is now underway with four local projects.
The Bishopdale residential subdivision with 135 housing lots being developed over the next 3 years; LQS Industrial park has 8ha available for further bespoke design/build/leaseback development; the Nelson Junction site which is permitted for a further 15,000sqm of retail development to accompany the existing Mitre10 and Speights Ale House; and Berryfields Crossing which is a 5.5ha mixed business site adjoining Richmond West Residential area.
Berryfields will be anchored by a new state-of-the-art, multi-screen cinema complex, food and beverage offerings, and commercial office space centred around a village green landscaped open space. Opening of the first stage in the development will be late 2021.
