Stead Construction Limited is a Hawke’s Bay based construction company that has a successful track-record in educational and commercial construction projects within the Central North Island.
The company has recently concluded a yearlong project, the re-building of Te Wharekura o Maniapoto Year 1 – 13 School, just outside Te Kuiti.
The $6 million project for the Ministry of Education, was designed by Hamilton’s MOAA Architects and Extra Mile Structural Engineers, from Hawke’s Bay, also brought their expertise to this project.
Stead Construction project manager Phil Elms, says the 1400qsm two-storey building which included a 200sqm multi-purpose space had a challenging design brief.
As a Year 1 – 13 school, New-Entrants to High School aged children are all housed in the one building. Special attention needed to be given to ensuring the specifi c needs of this wide age range.
“The junior school, located on the ground floor has been designed to meet Ministry of Education flexible learning design requirements, whille the upstairs level has been designed to meet the requirements of the senior high school age students,” says Phil.
The land the school is built on was donated to the Community in 1907 by Te Mahinga. Stead Construction Limited have built a Wharekura that truly delivers for the community using it.
“ It’s very functional, has some lovely features that reflect the values of the people of the Maniapoto, and meets the Ministry’s objectives around modern learning environments.”
The internal joinery has been supplied by Stead Constructions Joinery Factory and the school furniture has been supplied by Furnware.
The combination of both the joinery and the furniture has been utilised in such a way as to break down the big open-plan spaces. While the build was in progress, a fully operational school was going about it’s daily business just over the fence.
“Stead Construction has proven experience on these types of “live” working environments and have the systems in place to ensure that the build continues smoothly without too much disruption to the day to day learning and teaching within the school.”
