Taking the hassle out of renovation

Renovation and extension specialist Smith & Sons Blenheim has recently outlined its simple three-step renovation process which ensures its customers’ dreams are transformed into a high quality, great value reality – all within budget.
Smith & Sons Blenheim owner, qualified and licensed builder, and Blenheim local Daniel Francis says on joining the Smith & Sons group three-and-a-half years ago he liked the point of difference the company offered as a renovation specialist.
Like any thriving business, Smith & Sons is constantly evolving its systems and processes and has now developed the DPC process – Design, Plan, and Construct.
“This is the solution to a common issue which we were finding here at Smith & Sons, a lot of our clients had already invested a lot of money into a designer or an architect and would then come to us with their design and their council consent to ask for a price,” says Daniel.
“When the price came in over budget, they had no room to move because they already had consented plans,” he says.
“With this system we offer the ability to do a low-cost concept drawing in the design phase, then put in a relative cost to the renovation project.”
If the budget works in the design phase, Smith & Sons then takes its clients through to the planning stage, where the company takes care of finalising the plans, handling the consents, organising engineering aspects and subcontractors, and helping clients with their selections and colour choices.
The fun begins on site during the construction phase where Smith & Sons Blenheim’s team of expert builders and tradespeople put the preorganised plan into action.
With a full team working in the office helping to manage the job on site there is always someone available to assist clients with any questions they have, and to keep everything on track.
Smith & Sons’ new DPC process works for both residential and commercial renovation projects, as displayed in a recent commercial project completed by Smith & Sons Blenheim. “We’ve turned the United Video building here in Blenheim into a Liquorland,” Daniel says.
“It was quite an extensive renovation. We had about a 400sqm building with a timber floor, which was originally a gym and then set up as a big retail area.
“Liquorland required an area to be able to have a store room and a forklift operating inside, so we had to completely demolish the inside of the building, cut the floor out then reprep the floor and poor 250sqm of concrete floor inside the building.”
Alterations had to be completed on the buildings interior, including preparing an area for a large chiller room to be installed.
Commercial work is not new to Daniel, who has a commercial background and even site managed the construction of Bunnings in Blenheim several years ago.
But for Smith & Sons Blenheim, this was its third commercial project and a great opportunity to demonstrate its capabilities on a high profile, central site.
“It’s been a great project for us and we’ve ended up with clients who are extremely happy with the work that’s been carried out.”
