Contrary to its name, Rough & Co is a careful, experienced and enthusiastic build team of four, led by owner and licensed building practitioner Greger Rough. A Hawke’s Bay local born and bred, Greger, has 15 years of building experience within the high-end residential market. “I was fortunate enough to undertake my apprenticeship with a Devonport company that specialised in high-end villa restorations, rebuilds and renovations,” says Greger, “so that was a valuable skill base to learn the trade in.”
This foundational training makes Greger and the team skilled at villa and character home restoration. Put to good use during their cyclone recovery restoration of a Puketapu two-storey villa dating back to the 1800s. “This 650-square-metre home had 1.5 metres of flood waters go through it. There was a thick layer of silt through everything. Driveways and gardens were destroyed, and the ground floor of the house had to be fully replaced,” says Greger.
Rough & Co Construction removed the flooring and damaged walls, removed the silt, repaired foundations and laid new flooring throughout. “We managed to salvage all the old rimu flooring and laid ply down to double the flooring substrate,” he says, “then restored the interior to its former glory including a big separate dining room and a library space and big entrance stairwell.”

Another villa renovation Greger and his team have achieved is in Ahuriri, Napier. “Over 12 weeks, we turned a pokey villa into quite a luxury home,” says Greger. “New kitchen, bathroom and living areas plus we opened up the back of the house, added large sliders and four skylights throughout as well as a verandah.” Turning the less-than-adequate villa into a fusion of old and new functionality and aesthetics. “Now, it’s a beautifully restored villa with more light, form and function.”
Beyond their villa restoration capabilities, Greger and his 2IC, Vinnie, are both licensed builders with extensive experience in high-end architectural new builds. “We both have high-end residential building experience and can work with architects and interior designers to build your dream home.
