Quality that stands the test of time

Quality that stands the test of time
Cathedral ceilings and large deck with Louvretec roofi ng system are some of the design and build features in this stylish Hastings home built by Robert Lang Builders.

Hastings-based building company Robert Lang Builders has forged a reputation over nearly 50 years of successful builds in the Hawke’s Bay region. Although the company builds at all price points, its reputation for quality workmanship has seen its services particularly sought for high-end projects.
Company owner Robert Lang started his company in 1974 and says repeat business from clients has been a key to the company’s longevity and success.
In fact he has even built several homes for one client over 30 years indicating the high esteem in which the company is held. Robert puts this down to one thing – fussiness.
“I have the philosophy of do it once and do it right. Workmanship is paramount.Every job I do I do my best and it’s paid off and the company has a real name in the region,” he says.
Robert Lang Builders constructs predominantly new homes and the majority of clients come with their own plans.
But Robert can put people in touch with the right architect for their project if need be. Robert Lang Builders also completes renovation projects, alterations and additions and fits in smaller projects as well as the odd light commercial project.
Mainly focusing on one project at a time, with a new home build taking typically 10-12 months, allows for a focus on quality.
Combined with the history, longevity and experience of the company’s three staff, it has proved a winning combination.
In fact Robert has trained his carpenters himself and his most senior builder, Michael Cresswell, has worked for Robert Lang Builders for 23 years.
All staff are actually employed rather than contract workers and Robert says this has helped facilitate a tight team with a real focus on quality workmanship.
This focus on quality extends to all facets of the business – from how the staff conducts themselves on the job, to keeping a clean and tidy worksite. A project completed for Robert’s own daughter in rural Puketapu, Hastings, is a good demonstration of the high levels of quality the company achieves.
Designed by Clarkson Architects, the 350 square metre Linea weatherboard family home offers four bedrooms, three bathrooms, laundry and mudroom, office, a cinema room and sprawling kitchen, scullery and kitchen nook, which is complimented by a large living space comprising formal dining and lounge that opens out to decks on either side.
Four large handcrafted barn-style sliding doors are a real feature of the home, as well as extralarge window seats in the living, kitchen nook and master bedroom.

The main large entertaining deck comprises a Louvretec roofing system and Warmington Nouveau Pizzeria fireplace.
The home has a 30 metre long hallway and 2.7 metre studs throughout with exposed timber rafters and cathedral ceiling in the main living area.
At present Robert Lang Builders is completing an even larger home, a 600 square metre home plus 80 square metre deck in Hastings.
The project will keep the business busy this year. Robert Lang Builders is a member of New Zealand Certified Builders and as such can offer the association’s Halo Guarantee on many new home and renovation projects.
Robert, now aged 67, has retirement in his sights and is confi dent his staff will carry on building quality homes in their own rights.
“When you drive down a street and know that you’ve built several houses there it’s very satisfying. It’s also a key moment when I’ve finished a job then the client invites me back once they’ve moved in. When I walk inside and see them living in the home it’s a special feeling and makes me very proud.”
