RHCNZ expansion includes ARG’s new flagship clinic to open August 2025

The ARG Remuera flagship clinic will feature the latest MRI technology with integrated AI, along with PET CT and SPECT CT.

New Zealand’s leading and largest private radiology provider, RHCNZ Medical Imaging Group, is dedicated to making world-class radiology services accessible nationwide, enabling better health outcomes for all New Zealanders. The Group has a nationwide network that includes more than 160 specialist radiologists working across 72 clinics with over 1,360 staff, delivering more than 35% of radiology services nationwide across three brands: Auckland Radiology, Bay Radiology and Pacific Radiology.

RHCNZ is majority-owned by infrastructure investment firm Infratil, which holds a 50.1% stake, with the remaining 49.9% owned by doctors, staff and management from RHCNZ. Infratil’s backing enables RHCNZ to consistently invest in the latest technology. The organisation is already integrating AI into scan analysis and workflows to enhance accuracy and reduce clinical risk. AI is also improving clinic efficiency, helping manage the growing volume of imaging at a time when there is a global shortage of radiologists. Auckland Radiology Group (ARG), part of the RHCNZ Medical Imaging Group, has been serving the community since 1936.

“Our services are essential to the delivery of medical care. By ensuring patients are accurately diagnosed early, we help guide them onto the right pathway of care as quickly as possible.”

Today, ARG operates 15 specialist clinics across the Auckland region, providing a wide range of services including X-ray, MRI, ultra-sound, CT, CT calcium scoring, CT colonography, obstetric ultrasound, immigration X-rays, scintigraphy, fluoroscopy, hysterosalpingograms and interventional radiology. ARG is headed by managing radiologist and medical director Dr Stephen Merrilees, who is primarily based at the ARG Remuera Clinic. He leads a team of 42 radiologists across the Auckland region.

Dr Merrilees says RHCNZ plays a “pivotal role” in the NZ healthcare system. “Our services are essential to the delivery of medical care in New Zealand – providing critical diagnostic support, including to Health New Zealand. By ensuring patients are accurately diagnosed early, we help guide them onto the right pathway of care as quickly as possible.”

ARG’s latest and most exciting development is its new flagship clinic, currently taking shape at 99 Remuera Road in Auckland. Spanning 3,500 square metres, the new facility is double the size of the existing clinic at 101 Remuera Road. This $40-million project comprises a purpose-built facility and state-of-the-art medical equipment. Cassidy Construction is leading the build, with Acept handling the medical fit-out.

Construction began two and a half years ago in response to increasing demand, driven largely by an ageing population, which saw the team outgrow the existing site. The new clinic is set to open in August 2025 and will be home to six to nine radiologists daily, supported by a team of 50 staff. The new clinic will allow the team to expand their services to patients with new, advanced medical equipment and treatment options, shorter waiting times, enhanced diagnoses and faster results.

The Remuera flagship clinic will feature the latest MRI technology with integrated AI, along with PET CT and SPECT CT. This will enable the team to introduce new treatments, such as theranostics, which allow for simultaneous cancer diagnosis and therapy. RHCNZ continues to expand across New Zealand through a series of strategic developments. A new ARG clinic in Whangārei now offers PET CT scanning – technology previously limited to major centres.
