Q Commercial Construction is working on a project at the Department of Internal Affairs’ Auckland Archives building, which has seen the company work in a live environment and in extremely controlled conditions, says Q Group managing director Tony Eastland. The project has involved installing a new roof over the existing roof due to leaking issues.
The new roofing system (Kingzip SF400 Aluminium) was rolled on site due to the required significant single lengths (49 metre spans) of the sheets and to manufacture bespoke panels without joins, says Tony.
The project also required internal structural works to support the new roof structure, which also presented challenges as the team was working in a temperature and humidity controlled environment.
One aspect will involve breaking through from the inside to outside wall and Tony says a temporary enclosure will be constructed internally to protect the archives and internal environment of the building while those works are completed. The project commenced in October and will be completed by March.
“It really shows our ability to work in a live environment, something we have built up considerable expertise in over the years and numerous successful projects.
We work in with the occupants of the building to ensure we meet their requirements while getting the project completed in the most efficient way,” he says.
Tony was one of the founders of Q Group in 2005. Today the group includes Q Commercial Construction, Q Interiors and Q Maintenance. He thinks Q Group’s main point of difference is a pro-active attitude. “We prefer to predict problems before they occur so the job doesn’t get held up.
And if something unexpected does crop up we work really hard to find a solution quickly. We prefer not to contact the client with a problem but rather consult with them about solutions.
This builds trust so they know they can leave us alone to get on with the job which takes a great deal of the management strain off them,” he explains.

Tony says that Q Commercial Construction enjoys undertaking the design process if possible as it did on a recent design and build project, a new distribution centre in Takanini completed for Ottogi New Zealand.
“This means clients get a better quality and more cost efficient product at the end. We work closely on design and build projects with selected architects and engineers. This allows us to apply our practical knowledge early on in the building process, which can often save clients money.”
Other projects recently completed include the SPCA Hobsonville building and a new 4000m2 temperature controlled building and 700m2 two storey office for Bidfood in Hamilton.
The company is presently working on a new distribution centre for Bidfood in Hobsonville, a multi industrial unit project at Highgate and coldstore, warehouses and offices for Nishin/Zeacold. The last project will involve construction of three buildings including a freezer with adjoining ELAs.
Tony says Q Commercial Construction will continue to work hard to build on efficiencies, servicing clients well, resulting in successful outcomes.
