Successful builds hinge on rapport
Dean McGonagle purchased his Platinum Homes franchise in 2004 and has been building since 1986.

It was while he was lying on a beach on holiday that the director of Platinum Homes Northland Dean McGonagle had an ‘aha’ moment.
“I was listening to someone talk about Apple and they said that they don’t focus on telling people about the product but on why they make the product, why they do what they do.
“For me house building is a passion. I love building homes for people and I love the look on their faces when we hand over the keys. That’s what drives me and my team,” he says.
Dean says that through building hundreds of homes for satisfied clients he’s learned that a successful build hinges on relationships.
“It has to be an equal relationship between builder and client so that’s why we aim to be their trusted advisor. It’s not just about putting up walls; it’s about building that relationship. I want to be better friends with the client at the end of their build than at the beginning.”
Dean purchased his Platinum Homes franchise in 2004 and has been building since 1984.
At the time Platinum Homes was not planning on entering the Northland market, he says, but Dean’s desire to offer clients competitive pricing and continue to build quality mid-range homes saw him open the fourth Platinum Homes franchise in New Zealand at the time.
Dean’s partner Belinda Vuletich has project managed the builds for Platinum Homes Northland for over 13 years and he credits her as being one of the best project managers he’s ever worked alongside.
The company has now constructed over 250 homes under the Platinum Homes banner and covers the Kaipara, Whangarei and Far North District Council areas.
Platinum Homes Northland has two new show homes about to open where people can see the Platinum difference.
The 225 square metres show home in Haruru Falls offers three bedrooms plus study and has a view down onto the Waitangi River giving it a rural feel. The home is available for purchase on a two year lease back contract.
It is Platinum Homes Northland’s fourth show home in the Watea subdivision at Haruru Falls and stage three is due to be released shortly.

The Manaia plan is an interpretation of the classic, three-bedroom New Zealand home. All available space is carefully utilised.

A concept plan of sections can be viewed at the show home and Platinum Homes Northland welcomes early registrations of interest.
This three bedroom plus office show home complements the company’s other show home at Marsden Cove.
This show home is a little unique in that it is monopitch to reflect the beach/waterways setting and has distinctive features such as a window above the bench behind the hob in the kitchen to provide the cook an outside view while cooking.
A high ceiling in the front entry with window above allows natural light to flood the interior of the home, which also includes a theatre room coming off a large open plan family/dining/ kitchen area.
A large deck and outdoor area with two skylights extends from the master bedroom to living area.
Two house and land packages are nearly complete for viewing and are next to the show home. One is a 200 square metre, three bedroom, two bathroom home modelled off the Awatea floor plan.
The other is a three bedroom, two bathroom home based on the Platinum Homes Platinum Homes Manaia plan, which is an interpretation of the classic three-bedroom New Zealand home where all available space is carefully utilised.
The 235sqm home features a large, centralised open-plan kitchen flowing into the dining / family area and out through two adjacent stacker slider doors to the spacious undercover outdoor area.
A three-way main bathroom with a roomy vanity area, separate luxury bath and shower wet zone, plus separate WC allows for flexible living.
Dean and Belinda’s focus is to keep improving the systems they have created to make sure each client has a stress-free build process. They say their experience has taught them the right way to build a home.
They have a handpicked experienced team that guide clients through the initial stages to construction and handover. The team consists of six office staff and a sales team of four.
Two in particular have drafting skills, which helps Platinum Homes Northland assist clients with design and build projects. A regular team of trusted contractors are employed for consistency of quality.
“It is important to me that Platinum Homes Northland makes a difference in the industry and always strives for a quality of build and service that is second to none.”
