Passionate about Wellington, Peryer Construction has just completed the $7 million revitalisation of Wellington waterfront’s most vibrant area – the North Kumutoto Public precinct.
Covering 6000sqm, the 15-month ‘hard landscape’ development project involved extensive decking, boardwalks, decorative concrete, asphalt access ways, street furniture, lighting, public facilities, two bridges, a steel structure and complemented with penguin boxes and native plantings to attract bird life to the city.
Bill Peryer, who along with wife Jan owns and operates the Wellington-based construction company, says that while working on the exposed waterfront, coupled with the need for rigorous traffic and pedestrian control, presented some project challenges, Peryer Construction was proud to be associated with the transformation of such a highprofile area.
“We live in Wellington, so have huge ownership of our city. The opportunity to enhance Wellington’s waterfront has been very exciting for our team.”
The unique nature of the key elements and intricate architecturally designed structures including a wave like folded deck and striking steel/cedar pavilion required high quality skill and workmanship from the Peryer Construction’s carpenters and attending sub-contractors.
“Some of the sub-contractors were fairly new to us, but the skills and due care they offered contributed hugely to the success of the project.
“Our site teams excellent project management was another key factor in our delivery success as main contractor.”
Established over 30 years ago by Bill and Jan, Peryer Construction has established a reputation for being a trusted main contractor with expertise spanning the mid range commercial, industrial, educational and accommodation sectors of the construction industry.
Tending to focus exclusively on Wellington up to the Kapiti Coast, Bill and Jan say they are comfortable with Peryer Construction’s medium-sized niche in that market.
With an extremely buoyant construction industry in Wellington, Bill says the tendering market can be competitive and challenging but it is an environment Peryer Construction is familiar with, enjoying its fair share of the region’s government and private sector contracts.
“We’ve undertaken a variety of projects for the Ministry of Education including refurbishments, new builds, seismic strengthening and weathertightness remediation.
“Equally, we have proven performance in the private sector undertaking Aged Care projects, Home of Compassion Sisters Housing Development in Khandallah, and seismic upgrade of Printlink Building in Petone.
“Our team also carried out the $7m Refurbishment of NZ Post old building as Bunnings new Petone Warehouse. That project was carried out with a 7-month critical contract deadline to be delivered on time —”which we delivered.”
Word-of-mouth and repeat business have played a significant role in the company’s success over the years.
“We focus on good client relationships,” says Bill. “We don’t just build structures – we build lasting relationships too.
The success of our company has been built from building those relationships over many years – not only with our clients, project managers and architects but also the sub-contractors and suppliers.”
Bill and Jan attribute the company’s success to their excellent management and site teams – the majority of whom are waged employees. “We look after our people and appreciate them. We’re all a team and our business is nothing without our people.”
