Deborah Still’s effervescent passion for her work reveals an intrinsic love of art and design.

The owner of a Timaru-based business, Deborah Still Interior Design, never really has to do a days’ work; she lives and breathes what comes naturally to her and to help her clients achieve an outstanding result.

“I’m one of these very lucky people that their passion and what I’ve loved just morphed into what I do for a living.

“I’ve always been surrounded by art and colour and design; I came from a very arty family so I was always interested in architecture and design so I studied interior design in the early ’80s.”

One of New Zealand’s most sought after interior designers, Deborah believes in a constantly evolving style and design based upon impeccable quality; her work is underpinned by a coordinated fusion of clean lines and New Zealand colours.

She sees her work very much as a collaboration with her clients, likening the relationship to a mountain guide leading the way and providing assistance while encouraging people to push their comfort zone.
“In my experience, this means clients receive an individual interior design that works for them.

“Working together means the reassurance of an outcome everyone will love, with a focus on bespoke, consultative solutions for each client’s needs. I provide clients with a complete service that takes a project from concept to fruition.”

With more than 30 years of experience at the forefront of the New Zealand design industry, Deborah has made her mark on the interiors and exteriors of homes and commercial projects such as hotels, motels, rest care facilities, and offices.

Whether the scope is a full renovation or simply to add finishing touches, Deborah provides project management and support throughout the full process, however, her service is not only for those with grand design plans and deep pockets.

Because she has direct access to nearly 50 suppliers of fabrics, furnishings, wall coverings, drapes and blinds she can help clients achieve what they want within almost any budget, including sourcing end-of-line products at extremely favourable rates.

Her knowledge and experience extend beyond colour and texture to cover the quality and fade resistance of materials which is important in New Zealand’s strong ultraviolet light, while also taking into account climatic and trend differences between the North and South Islands.

Rather than following the trend towards “fail-safe” neutral tones in interiors, Deborah prefers to cut her own path through the combined use of colour, design and patterns across the full spectrum of materials, fixtures, fittings and accessories.

“You have to be brave and you have to know what you’re doing to be able to do that. People that choose to work with me tend to like the look I create.”

For exteriors, there is one opportunity to make a strong first impression, consequently, the design needs to be sympathetic to the style and shape of the home as well as to its environment.
Skilled tradesmen are an important part of the process, Deborah says.

“The tradespeople are vital to making a really good finish; I work with a really good team of people.”
