Demand sees Onsen Hot Pools heat up
Onsen Hot Pools has undergone a major expansion which has doubled its offerings and reduced booking waitlists.

An idyllic relaxation spot in the midst of Queenstown’s many adrenaline-based activities, the Onsen Hot Pools has been in such demand it has undergone a massive expansion which has doubled its offering and reduced the length of time visitors need to book in advance.
From the end of November 2019, Onsen Hot Pools has three additional ‘original onsens’, the private pool with retractable picture window, and a brand new outdoor experience with five new cedar lined mineral hot pools, sheltered by shade sails and overlooking the Shotover River.
Onsen Hot Pools’ day spa facility has also been expanded with exclusive single use hot tubs and a full spa menu for more luxurious and indulgent soak and spa packages.
Onsen Hot Pools is world renowned for its unique kiwi twist to the Japanese bathing tradition, and is heavily booked year round. Pre-expansion, the business won a 2019 World Luxury Spa award.
Onsen Hot Pools HR and marketing manager Liz Marshallsea says, when the company’s cur-rent owners took over in 2016 and completed a refurbishment of the reception area and added a massage suite to begin offering the Ultimate Relaxation experience, Onsen Hot Pools went viral on Instagram.
“In the winter time, clients had to book eight weeks in advance and in the summer, about six weeks in advance,” she says. “We used to get quiet in October and March, but now we’re busy all year round.
Our expansion means more availability and happier customers.” A new spa treatment menu has something for everyone, including pregnancy and men’s massages.
All spa treatments begin with a 45-minute soak in one of the hot tubs overlooking the Shotover River and picturesque mountains.
The Ultimate Relaxation Experience continues inside a restful spa treatment room, where guests can choose a one or two hour rejuvenation experience from an extensive range of massage and facial options.
“Our team of qualified and experienced in-house therapists come from all over the world and have knowledge of massage techniques I never even knew existed,” Liz says.
“They deliver a range of both relaxation and deep tissue massages as well as facial treatments for women and men, using products from Thalgo, Pure Fiji, and Herb Farm.”
Four new single use cedar hot tubs have been added to some of the day spa rooms, bringing another added luxury for couples or individuals who want the very best in personalised relaxation and pampering. Onsen Hot Pools is now offering a complimentary drink and snack with every pool booking.
Onsen Hot Pools captures pure water from the surrounding mountains to fill and continually refresh its pools. The passing water fl ow is bombarded with high intensity ultraviolet rays and if required, a touch of bromine is added, leaving the tubs with a clarity and purity to match their surroundings.
Heat exchangers are used to transfer the heat from outgoing pool water to fresh incoming spring water, so while pools are continually refreshed, they are done so in an environmentally friendly manner.
