Cabinetry firm meets the market
MI Kitchens offers a manufacturing facility with the latest equipment including a Format 4 CNC machine.

New cabinetry company MI Kitchens was started out of a desire to offer customers a better product than was currently available on the market, says owner Morris Zhang.
Morris and business partner Luke Xia own building hardware supply company YHL, which they started in 2014, and say that many of their customers were struggling to find cabinetry for homes with high levels of quality and design.
Morris and Luke met while studying for a business degree. Morris has studied carpentry and worked for several years as a builder while Luke’s expertise is in the business side, including accountancy and IT.
Morris says they quickly identified the ingredients necessary for a successful joinery business: the best machinery, talented joiners and great designs.
This led them to invest in all these areas of the business.
Based in Hobsonville, MI Kitchens offers a manufacturing facility with the latest equipment including a Format 4 CNC machine.
Morris says the company’s focus on the most up-to-date manufacturing technology and strict production standards ensure excellent precision and the best processing quality.
MI Kitchens has also invested in a Homag edge banding machine to bring first class edge processing solutions to its clients’ products.
Joiner Robert Cui has been employed who offers MI Kitchen clients around 30 years experience. A team of six in total is employed.
Morris says customers, who include developers, YHL clients and property owners, are welcome to bring their own design.
MI Kitchens then turns the designs into renders and undertakes the full manufacture process deliv-ering the finished product.
Alternatively MI Kitchens can undertake a full design and build process, visiting the customer’s site to take measurements, discussing their needs then coming up with various design options.
Morris points out that there are no standard products. “Every design we do is unique,” he says.
Since it launched MI Kitchens has had good reception from their database of YHL clients.
It is also targeting designers seeing that as the way to ensure top quality designs to give MI Kitchens a unique edge.
Morris says at present people are favouring a minamalist look with clean simple lines.
Popular colour choices are black and white and materials are acrylic or melamine board.
MI Kitchens uses trusted brands in its products such as Blumm and Haefele.
Although kitchen joinery is the main focus of the business MI Kitchens also manufactures bathroom joinery such as vanities and wardrobes.
The company works Auckland wide but can deliver to any part of the country via flat packs for people to assemble on site.
