Wine tasting in the morning sun, a gourmet vineyard lunch followed by a cruise through the Marlborough Sounds while enjoying freshly caught seafood – if ever a region had it all, Marlborough would surely be it.
With its world famous wine region located mere minutes from the equally famous Sounds, seeing it all in a day is never too much to ask. Or stay a few days and enjoy even more of what the province offers.
And that, says Marlborough Tour Company General Manager Scott McKenzie, is what makes Marlborough such a great place to visit, regardless of your time frame.
“Very rarely does one region enjoy such a wonderful mix in one place, from indulging in some of the world’s best wines right at the source, to the splendid natural environment that is the Marlborough Sounds, all within a short drive of one another.”
Scott says Marlborough Tour Company offers a number of day and half day tours that take in the best of Marlborough’s iconic attractions – such as its aptly named Icons Tour which includes a wine tour, waterfront lunch and seafood cruise – or visitors can opt to customise their own itineraries to suit.
Autumn is a great time to visit as the wine industry gears up for vintage, Scott adds.
“Vintage is exciting, it’s frantic and it’s dynamic. The wineries are buzzing, there’s visiting winemakers from all parts of the world and it’s just a really interesting time to see the industry in action.
Marlborough Tour Company has a great relationship with many wineries, so you’ll definitely get the insider’s view.”
On the flipside, the Marlborough Sounds are quieter in autumn and the change in season brings spectacular natural scenes, with early morning mist draped over glassy water, followed by stark blue skies and gentle breezes. The sunrises and sunsets are spectacular and no one is the same.
Cameras at the ready. “Cruising the Marlborough Sounds on our Greenshell Mussel Cruise or Jing Cai Seafood Cruise in autumn is simply a delight.
There’s less people around, but more wildlife such as seals, dolphins and penguins.
Treating our guests to time on a secluded beach to admire some pretty incredible views, with nobody around but us, is something you cannot beat.” “It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it,” Scott smiles.
