Customised building solutions for Sth Canterbury
When seeking more than a generic plan, clients know they can rely on Mark Farrant Building Ltd & Specialised Structures.

Having lived in Timaru for more than 30 years and having worked in construction most of that time, Mark Farrant is recognised as one of the region’s ‘go-to’ builders with a wealth of local knowledge and experience.
As well as running his own building business – Mark Farrant Building Ltd – his team also belong to a network of construction professionals offering the Specialised Structures building system that enables delivery of preengineered customised steel building solutions, along with all the buying power advantages that come with being part of a national group.
Clients looking for more than a generic plan know they can rely on Mark Farrant Building Ltd & Specialised Structures South Canterbury to come up with something perfectly tailored to fit their requirements.
That includes supplying customised flat pack kitset sheds and garages.
“We always start with what the client wants and make everything to meet their specific needs,” says Mark, who began his career studying architectural draughting for two years before starting a building apprenticeship.
Ultimately, he ended up buying out the builder who had employed him for many years to set up his own business three years ago.
“Once we know what a client wants, we put a plan together for them and run it by our engineering team to see what’s possible. Then we’ll give them an estimate on the build price or the supply of kitset price. We can then produce the required consent documents – we do everything in-house.”
Mark Farrant Building Ltd & Specialised Structures South Canterbury works throughout the region from the Rangitata River to Twizel and Waitaki.
“A lot of people here think you can build a garage and live in it while you build a new home. It is important to ensure that the garage is built to a habitable standard that meets seismic and fire safety standards and we can certainly achieve that for our clients.”
Having local knowledge is also important in South Canterbury, where winter frosts can be extreme in some alpine areas.
Mark says he and his small hardworking team of three is very familiar with the challenges of local conditions and how to work with them.
Recent projects have included new homes built to lock-up (with owners completing interior fit-outs), double garages and sleep outs, work-shops and sheds.
“We’ve just finished a large 900sqm storage warehouse in Timaru with high tilt slab walls and a 28 metre Clear Span roof and we will soon be building a 50 metre long horse stables at a high country station.”
Renovations, repairs and re-roofing jobs are also keeping the team busy. “People are spending money around their homes. We can do everything from fencing through to replacement joinery – we can do it all.”
Looking forward at what’s ahead in 2019, the company anticipates being involved with earth-quake strengthening of a commercial building in central Timaru.
The home renovation and repair market looks set to remain buoyant and the team is also booked to complete a substantial two-storey home over coming months.
