Northlands shopping centre is set to receive an $18.8 million development after Kiwi Property unveiled plans to deliver a vibrant new dining and entertainment precinct, to be named ‘Langdons Quarter’.
Kiwi Property’s Manager – Shopping Centres, Shelley Jenkin said: “New Zealanders have long had a love affair with dining out, and, according to Statistics New Zealand, the proportion of households that reported eating out increased 7% to 51.5% in 2016.
“As New Zealand’s leading owner of shopping centres, we are continually focused on delivering spaces where New Zealanders want to be.”
The Langdons Quarter project at Northlands features the development of a new food precinct beneath the existing cinema complex, two new external restaurant structures, a new pedestrian entry providing direct access to the southwestern carpark building and refurbishment of existing bathrooms.
Additionally, the development includes the reconfiguration of the existing food court and improved pedestrian fl ow within the southern end of the centre.
Langdons Quarter will provide a mix of exciting and vibrant food and beverage operators providing ‘grab and go options’ through to casual dining. In total, Langdons Quarter will include 12 food and beverage tenancies.
Two new buildings that will accommodate licensed casual dining operators. The dining precinct will energise the southern end of the centre and link seamlessly with the existing centre.
The design of Langdons Quarter draws on international trends to provide a unique experience for its customers.
As part of the development, direct pedestrian access will be created to the multi-level carpark on the south- western corner of Northlands, providing great convenience for customers.
In 2016, Kiwis spent almost $9 billion on dining out, mainly at cafés and restaurants, takeaway outlets and bars. Northlands Centre Manager, Vicki Bain, said:
“We are very excited about Langdons Quarter and the impact it will have on the existing centre. Food is a wonderful way of bringing people together. New Zealanders are increasingly seeking ways to socialise in real life environments, away from their mobile devices. Shopping centres have always been places to connect socially, and are becoming even more vital to fulfill that need in the digital age.”
As part of the Langdons Quarter project, seismic strengthening works will be undertaken with steel structure added to the building.
This steel will be used to create an industrial aesthetic to the design, which is finessed by a significant level of green planting to provide a sophisticated feel to the precinct.
Construction commenced in January 2018, with tenancies expected to open for trade from October 2018. Kiwi Property has been instrumental in developing best-in-class shopping centres and landmark office towers since 1993.
