Silver award pleasant surprise for firm
The Whangaparoa home that won silver for the Auckland / Northland region in the House of the year competition.

First time entrant in the Registered Master Builders House of the Year competition, Ken Wilson, was pleasantly surprised when his company Ken Wilson Builders took out a silver award in the Auckland/Northland region.
The home in Whangaparaoa is located on a section with breathtaking ocean views but also meant the site was a little tricky to build on as it was near a cliff face.
Discovering that the site had some groundwork issues meant some stabilisation work was required.
Designed by Creative Arch, the contemporary home includes interesting angles, which Ken said required great accuracy as any deviation had a flow on affect to the next stage of the project. Sloping rooftops and angled walls add a dynamic sense of space.
The interplay of lines and materials, including vertical cedar cladding, also allows the home to sit perfectly in its surroundings.
The 274sqm interior is full of light due to white walls, high ceilings and generous windows and glazed sliding doors to make the most of the views. Kwila decks and wood flooring also link the home closely to its natural surroundings.
The home includes four bedrooms, three bathrooms and two living spaces. “We’re really proud of this home,” says Ken.
“It show the different types of materials that can be used and nicely showcases our skills as a team. The clients are very happy with it so it’s a win-win.”
Ken started his Auckland company Ken Wilson Builders in 2006. A Licensed Building Practitioner, Ken brings overseas experience having built in the UK and US.
Ken Wilson Builders offers a range of building services – new home, renovations, leaky home repairs, light commercial projects and smaller projects such as decks and fences.
Ken says the key to a successful project outcome is good communication with clients and others involved in the build every step of the way.
Ken Wilson Builders focuses on a couple of
projects at a time in order to offer his clients best value and the personal building experience they desire.
Ken Wilson Builders is currently working on the renovation of a bungalow in Mt Albert, which will see the interior gutted and re-built along with a new swimming pool outside. “The aim is to modernise the home but still remain faithful to the original home,” he says.
Ken Wilson Builders has also recently completed a large factory refurbishment where the team gutted the interior then re-fitted it to the client’s specifications.
The company also has a number of smaller projects underway such as bathroom and kitchen renovations, decks and swimming pools as people get ready for summer.
Ken says the award win has generated a lot of interest. Most of his work is by word of mouth from previous happy clients, something he is particularly proud of.
“I like the size the company is at and the fact we can five a really personal service. We plan to keep on doing what we’re doing and hopefully win some more awards.”
