Pool expertise another string to the bow
Jacobs Construction is the sole NZ agent for Italian swimming pool construction experts, Myrtha Pools.

Returning to an historically significant build is an experience Lance Jacobs and his team from Jacobs Construction are enjoying.
A year ago the Waipukurau-based builder under-took a seismic upgrade of St Mary’s Church, closed by the Diocese of Waiapu at Easter 2014.
Now, to top off that special build Jacobs Construction are back Earthquake strengthening the steeple?“It will take us six weeks to complete the project and its great to have the opportunity to see the complete restoration of the church through.
It’s a very important building for the community,” says Lance.
Jacobs Construction’s roots go back to 1978 when Lance began building homes.
Over the years he has built cool-stores, commercial projects, along with continuing building dwellings all over the Hawkes Bay province.
In 1999, the company evolved further, becoming sole NZ agent for Italian swimming pool construction experts, Myrtha Pools.
Since this time Lance and the team have built just shy of 100 pools.
Lance says he was drawn to the quality of the pools which are manufactured in Italy and assembled on site.
“As a company they are continually improving their technology. The Myrtha Pools Company have a very innovative approach to continually improving. They are very keen to ensure their agents around the world remain absolutely up-to-date with pool material and construction technologies. As a result we have made several trips to Italy.”
Pool expertise another string to the bow
A recent pool project at Waipawa, 6km from Waipukurau, had a really good-feel aspect to it.
“Waipukurau has an indoor pool and when the decision was made to replace the old Centennial outdoor pool at Waipawa it meant a win-win for both towns in the community. The project was partly funded by Council and it means that all year round locals can enjoy swimming,” Lance explains.
The original 33m outdoor concrete pool was replaced, in the same position, with a new 25m swimming pool with attached ‘learn to swim’ pool.
Lance says the project went very well, supported by a number of local subbies and with Palmerston North company FPC (Filtration and Pumping Commercial Ltd) supplying the filter and water reticulation system.
One of the benefits of the materials Myrtha Pools uses is that they withstand seismic activity, unlike concrete construction.
“PVC is used as a liner on the floor while the pool’s wall panels are stainless steel coated in PVC which is ‘hot laminated’ to the stainless steel panels.”
Another pool project, building two 25m pools at Swimtastic in Auckland, was completed in March with the facility opened on 17th April.
The new facility in St Johns has a narrower pool for learn to swim and beginner swimmer classes catering for babies from six months of age, while the wider main pool offers swimming space for older children and adult swimmers.
Jacobs Construction is underway with construction of another Myrtha Pool for Napier ‘learn to swim’ business Jillyfish.
Meanwhile the company also continues building homes, having completed in the last year a substantial house at Aramoana Beach and another home just out of Waipukurau.
And as for the future, Lance says son Blair is gradually taking over more responsibility.
“We’re taking this slowly as I still enjoy getting out on site and building.”
Along with Blair, Jacobs Construction employs several tradesmen, including a painter and two apprentices.
“We’ve got plenty of work ahead this year and have the capacity to take on more than one project at a time.”
