A 12-year project completed by Humphreys Landscaping won the 2018 Supreme Overall Winner award at the PSP Landscape of the Year Awards.

A special project for Humphreys Landscaping, one the company has been working on for the past 12 years, has now been recognised by the industry as the 2018 Supreme Overall Winner at the PSP Landscape of the Year Awards.
The award is a notable accomplishment for Humphreys Landscaping, and the garden is a prime and extremely pretty example of what can be achieved by a professional and integrated landscape company providing design, construction, and maintenance services.
Humphreys Landscaping director, Scott Humphreys says the project was part of an overall renovation of a grand Herne Bay villa and its garden.
The clients had worked with Humphreys Landscaping for the past 25 years and on two previous properties. “This place has got scale, everything there needed to be proportioned,” Scott says.
“It’s a large home with large living areas and a large pool. “Privacy from the road and security were big considerations, and the garden needed to feel in fitting with the house; simple, but classic and timeless.”
With the pool close to the house, its space hinges on the living areas coming out of the house creating a resort-type feel. Pathways from the road to the house are symmetrical and inviting, and serve to link the house to the landscape.
Humphreys Landscaping used only one type of tree throughout the property, a beautiful purple jacaranda which as a deciduous tree lets the light in during the winter and provides shade in the summer.
The striking effect of the blooms, both on and off the branches, provides an amazing contrast with the pale tiles surrounding the home. “It’s about having scale, balance, and symmetry in the garden,” Scott says.
“You don’t need lots of dif ferent plants and lots of different colours, and the paving and materials we’ve used in the garden tie in nicely with the villa. It seems like it’s seamless.”
Competition judges said the garden was serene and beautiful, and walking into it felt like walking into another world.

Humphreys Landscaping’s design, construction, and maintenance teams have all had a hand in this project, and Scott says they are ecstatic with their win, which included three gold awards for design, construction, and maintenance as well as the supreme prize. “It’s a really great motivator for our people,” Scott says.
“We are looking at more gardens to enter the Landscapes of Distinction awards, which has now turned from a biennial to an annual event.”
