Proud to build iconic development

Kaiapoi’s recently opened Port and Eagle development presented an exciting challenge for Kaiapoi-based building company Hazeldine Construction.
The company won the contract to build the Port and Eagle Brewery and gastropub, as well as the apartment on the upper level of the development.
It also took on the council contract to build the adjoining cantilevered terraces and boardwalk on Kaiapoi’s riverfront.
Their work is ongoing on the development’s next stage, a retail and office complex that is planned to open in October.
Husband and wife team Jared and Jasmine Hazeldine have run the construction company together for twenty years.
Over that time their operation has expanded from sole trader to a team of twenty-five trades-people and apprentices. And Jasmine emphasises that they’re exactly that – a team.
“We’re a family-oriented business, and that’s how we work. “Our staff are really loyal, hard-working people, and Jared and I are right in there working alongside them.”
The Hazeldine team brought all of its combined skills into play for the Port and Eagle build, which required specific fire and building code regulations for each of its commercial, public-use, and residential areas.
Jasmine says that, while it was complex to combine these differing elements into one project, its exactly the kind of challenge the company enjoys taking on.

The Port & Eagle Brewpub, built by Hazeldine Construction, is located in Kaiapoi’s Riverview Terraces and Boardwalk.

She believes that building good relationships, and keeping the lines of communication open between everyone involved – designers, council, contractors and end-users – was key in making such a large-scale project run smoothly.
“We’re really good at finding solutions. We ask a lot of questions and seek out the information we need to make progress.”
Jasmine is thrilled with the results and says that, as a proud North Canterbury local, it’s great to see Kaiapoi’s river being developed as a community asset.
She credits developers Jedd Pearce and Mark Revis of PLC Group for having the vision behind the Port and Eagle. “They travelled to Melbourne to look at similar developments and came up with a really strong concept from the outset.
Kaiapoi is lucky to have guys like them who’re prepared to back some-thing so ambitious.”
As well as ongoing work on the Port and Eagle development, Hazeldine Construction has a full portfolio of projects ranging from residential new builds to high-quality renovations, retail, and commercial construction projects throughout Christchurch and North Canterbury.
It was the key contractor on a number of life-style villages, including the Maltworks Lifestyle Village in Christchurch, Northbrook Villas in Rangiora and Ranui Mews in Kaiapoi. Hazeldine Construction supports many local grass-roots charities and community groups.
They are proud to have undertaken numerous post-quake projects that have helped to rebuild their community socially as well as physically.
Jasmine says i t’s particularly special to be involved in a project like the Port and Eagle, as they are also part of the community that gets to enjoy it.
“We took the whole team there to celebrate. It felt great knowing we’d helped make it happen.”
