Experienced firm making its mark

With over 40 years experience in commercial construction, Christchurch firm Hanham & Philp Contractors Ltd have nurtured a reputation as experienced, trusted and fair building contractors.
Senior Quantity Surveyor for Hanham & Philp Contractors, Daniel Parkinson, says it’s not just about completing the job well.
“From a construction point of view, it’s the benefit gained from a collaborative working approach, opposed to working to self interests,” says Daniel.
“Our aim is to present a fair development that allows absolutely everybody to leave with a high level of satisfaction from the project.”
That fair and collaborative approach to construction projects, along with significant experience in pre-cast concrete panel construction led to Hanham & Philp Contractors’s selection as lead contractor for the new hospitality and office development in a prime location along Riccarton Road.
Involved in the project from the days of the early concept plans, Daniel says Hanham & Philp Contractors’s early contractor involvement was helpful to the developer who had reasonably limited experience in property development.
“Early involvement added certainty to the project. Along with the developer’s architect and engineers and the developer’s own project manager, we helped overcome a number of obstacles that cropped up during the development journey.
“There have been really good discussions back and forth—design versus build-ability–versus cost and quality. All those aspects create a more successful development.”
Broken into two stages, the two building complex is located in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Riccarton Road, just before Westfield Mall as you head away from the City.
Each development stage consists of a two-storey pre-cast concrete panel building, purpose built for mixed-use tenancy.
A driveway leading through to a courtyard and carpark area separates the two buildings and leads into Nelson Street, providing rear access to the buildings.
Completing Stage One of the project in June of 2018, the ground floor of the 700sqm building was handed over to its two tenants – Robbies Bar and Bistro and Mexicali Fresh Restaurant.
The upper level, reserved for office space, remains available for tenancy. With the signing of a well-known hospitality tenant, construction of the second building has now commenced.
Just shy of 1200sqm, the building is scheduled for a July completion date. A major part of the building construction was pre-cast rectangular concrete panels, which Hanham & Philp Contractors undertook themselves.
Strong vertical lines, feature rebating and small architectural fins and louvres throughout the exterior of each building create features and angles that present interesting geometric structures.
Bold colours along with a black feature canopy with a wooden soffit and feature lighting on the façade along Riccarton Road add to the buildings’ striking appearance.
Reflecting on the challenges of the project, Daniel says that as Stage One was progressing changes were made to the tenancies that impacted on the fit-out information.
“We really had to change things on the fly in terms of bathrooms, ventilation and air conditioning. The key to that was being flexible along with strong collaboration and regular discussion with all the parties involved.”
