Designed with performance in mind

Despite doubling its manufacturing capacity Extreme Boats is struggling to keep up with demand for its product.
Extreme Boats began manufacturing its range of aluminium fishing boats in 1998 in small runs and now has over 70 full-time staff and produces over 300 boats per year and growing.
The company has also just taken out several awards at the recent Hutchwilco Boat Show held in May 2018 meaning there is no possibility of demand abating.
Its recently released 795 Walk Around took out Specialist Fishing Boat up to 8 metres and best new model.
Extreme Boats director Glenn Shaw says that the vessel offers the ability to safely move right around the sides and bow area of the boat resulting in a new level of functionality, practicality and “fishability” while still having a spacious cabin and cockpit area.
It’s 605 Centre Console took out the Specialist Fishing Boat up to 7 metres and the prestigious overall Boat Of The Show Award.
Glenn says that after years of design concepts and on water testing the 605 Centre Console is unique in that it has no cabin resulting in a boat that is extremely easy for fishermen to cast off from.
He says the boat is a good example of the company’s focus on designing vessels that perform well on the water. “That’s the number one priority,” he says.
“This is a smallish boat packed with features including a flushing toilet concealed beneath the front seat, gas cooker, large chillybin in a sliding drawer, solar power, sink with running tap, bow mounted electric motor and much more.”
It’s all par for the course as Extreme Boats is one of the most awarded boat builders in New Zealand since the company won its first award at the show in 2006. The company now offers over 20 models.
Glenn says that from the outset he could see no benefit in entering the trailer boat market without introducing a series of recreational boats with a major point of difference.
For this reason they chose to employ the services of well-known designer Scott Robson who designed the company’s distinctive deep vee hull design, which now features on every boat the company produces.
“The enables our boats to boast fine entry for high-speed head sea performance while retaining a high chine with full shoulder for excellent sea-handling. Excellent stability at rest or full-throttle comes from a pair of very large aft chine flats. This also makes for an incredibly dry ride,” explains Glenn.
He says there is a strong focus on continual improvement with modifications to enhance the designs.
 

Extreme Boats vessels are built to survey and CPC certified, the New Zealand audited boat building standard.
The company has just invested in a new paint finishing facility at its factory to give greater control over this important part of the process and bring it in-house.
It’s just one of a number of continual investments the company is making to increase production capacity. The company is a member of NZ Marine, which promotes professionalism in the marine industry.

While Extreme Boats is kept busy producing vessels primarily for the New Zealand market the international market is growing.
Australia is the biggest offshore market with around 33% of products heading across the Tasman with smaller orders heading to Japan and the United States.
The biggest challenge facing the award winning Kiwi company at the moment is simply keeping up with demand.
