Success built on handcrafted approach
Des Offen Builders specialises in new builds, renovation projects and extending homes.

Des Offen Builders specialises in a personal approach when it comes to building new homes or undertaking renovation projects in Otago where the company is based.
“I’m not a salesperson; I’m a tradesperson and clients deal with me from start to finish,” says Des. “People like the choice and flexibility I can offer,” he says.
Based in Cromwell, Des Offen Builders offers building services in the Otago region specialising in new builds, renovation projects and extending homes.
A member of New Zealand Certified Builders, Des started his company in 2009 and offers his clients around 30 years of experience.
He says that because he was taught the full range of building skills, as was the norm when he completed his apprenticeship, this enables him to be able to complete virtually every aspect of a project himself.
It’s a handcrafted approach and, because clients deal directly with him, it makes the build process very personal resulting in a bespoke, unique home, he says.
His many years of experience in the building and construction industry, give Des the expertise to offer high-quality solutions with the client’s budget always in mind.
People can arrive at Des Offen Builders with their own plans or Des can pair them with the right architect to suit the project.
He employs a trusted team of contractors and subcontractors as required depending on the scale of the project.
Examples of types of projects that Des Offen Builders undertakes have included a renovation to a BP station including upgrading the kitchen and knocking down a wall to enlarge a space.
The company also added a gantry kitchen to the side of Mt Difficulty Wines building.
A recent project was a large renovation where a cottage was gutted and the footprint of the house doubled and garage added.
Inside everything was redone including rewiring and re-pitching the roof.
Brickwork of the extension was matched to existing brickwork, which proved one of the most challenging parts of the project as the original work was not necessarily always plumb. This was then plastered over to give a modern look.
Des says that he enjoys the challenge of such projects: “It’s about finding solutions and creating a great end result for the client,” says Des who is a Licensed Building Practitioner.
Des Offen Builders typically works on one large project at a time plus some smaller ones. Des says that the region is very busy at the moment, partly influenced by the building boom in Queenstown and Wanaka.
He sees that there is a lot of potential for growth in Central Otago. At the moment Des Offen Builders is completing a project which includes a bathroom renovation and a small addition to a house.
“I really enjoy the hands-on approach to building and being involved in every aspect of the build. “Clients like the fact it’s me they deal with from start to finish.
“I am always available to answer their questions and offer advice. It’s an extremely satisfying way to build.”
