Marty’s team has plenty on the go
The four-bedroom, two-storey home features a combination of James Hardie Stria and Linea weather board.

Marty Sheldon formed Wellington building company Decisive Construction in 2014, initially undertaking renovations and working as a contract builder. “We just worked our way up to the place we are now where we are concentrating on house-and-land packages,” says Marty.
His building career extends back to 2007, having qualified as a builder after a four year apprenticeship. Today, Marty has a team of three other builders and apprentices and is looking to employ another. This year looks another busy one with seven houses already in line to be built.
When Business Central spoke with Marty Decisive Construction had completed a full design and build in Grenada Village, a suburb located in the northern hills of Wellington, on the eastern side of the Northern Motorway, 2 kilometres north of Johnsonville.
The suburb is proving a popular choice as it is only minutes from many amenities and ideally situated to drive to Hutt Valley and Wellington.
The shape of the section determined the shape of the house and a large amount of retaining work was carried out to get the largest possible building site. The four-bedroom, two-storey home measured 220sqm. On the ground floor is a double garage, separate living and bathroom, kitchen dining and media room with doors out on to a deck.
“Upstairs there are three further bedrooms including an ensuite for the master and a family bathroom.”Marty says the design process involved two concept plans. Once the right clients were found some ‘tweaking’ finalised the floorplan.
The home is constructed using J Frames and Lintels and a combination of James Hardie Stria and Linea weather board. It has two mono-pitched roofs and is double-glazed throughout.“The colours preferred both in and out were black and white so it makes quite a bold statement.”
The extensive retaining work around three sides of the section reclaimed 60qsm.These days Marty is less on the tools and more focused on securing further building opportunities and project managing.Another project in Aro Valley proved an interesting and engaging experience for Marty and the team. It involved joining two historic houses to form one residence.
“I really think the company is at a good size but will potentially take on two more this year. “Ideally as things progress we will focus on developing our own homes to sell. “I think over the next five years there will continued to be quite a lot of new subdivision development.”
Decisive Construction offers a full design and build service with an inhouse designer.“It means we can carry the project right through from initial discussion, concept, final drawings and construction and I think that is something clients increasingly want.
“So they are just dealing with the one person at all times.” Marty has partnered with Sellwood Products Ltd, who specialise in attic ladder systems to access attic space. “In Wellington making the most of all available storage space makes sense.”
