Auckland company DC Builders brings a long history of commercial and residential construction experience to every project meaning it can tackle a variety of projects, says company director Mel Riley who owns the company with brother Justin.
Both brothers bring extensive experience as site supervisors with some of New Zealand’s largest commercial contractors and started their company in 2014 from a desire to return to their roots of residential construction.
“Our goal has always been to run a company together and offer a more personal approach to building to our clients and also our staff,” says Mel.
From the design to the construction the brothers handle the entire process with a huge focus on making the process enjoyable for each client and stress free.
Their background in commercial construction has impressed upon the brothers the importance of planning and programming so that jobs flow smoothly.
Mel says they are very technology focused. For example a mobile app offers clients ready access to their project any time.
A huge emphasis is placed on quality at all stages of each project. DC Builders are registered Certified Builders giving customers the added assurance that all work completed is backed by a 10 Year Certified Builders Guarantee.
The company is also a member of Master Builders, which Mel says means clients know they have the best in the business undertaking their project. The company has entered one of its new builds into this year’s Master Builders Home of the Year competition.
Both trade qualified builders, Mel is also a designer and belongs to the Architectural Designers of New Zealand so DC Builders can offer specialist expertise in design and build projects.
The company of course also builds from clients’ own plans and works with a range of talented architects.
“Our design experience means that when we design a project we do so from a builder’s perspective. It looks good but also goes together well so everything runs smoothly on site and problems are usually ironed out at the design stage.
We also bring this approach to any project, even if we haven’t designed it ourselves,” says Mel A case in point is a recent project, a large -scale renovation in Murrays Bay designed by Colin Campbell Architects.
A two-storey wing was added with a walkway connecting the existing home with the new addition. The entire house was re-clad and new bathrooms, sunk in swim/spa pool and outdoor entertaining area added.
Re-clads are something the brothers have built up specialist expertise in and they have also recently completed the re-clad of a three level home in Remuera.
The house was modernized with a new cedar façade and glass balustrading and deck. They have also completed the re-clad of a home in West Harbour recently and this project they designed as well.
Mel takes on the roles of pricing, design and project management leaving Justin free to take charge
of the build on site.
The brothers employ a team of 12 staff marking the huge growth of the business in a short space of time as the company was started with just Mel, Justin and a couple of other builders.
DC Builders works primarily in Auckland central, North Shore and Rodney. “We are a young energetic team and we have focused on developing a good team culture and trusted group of subcontractors.
“Because at the end of the day it’s the people that are the most important aspect in achieving a great end result for our clients.”
