Delivering highest standards, every time
Custom Construction has been operating for the last nine years, growing from a one-man operation carrying out new housing and renovation work to a team of 26 with extensive commercial construction capabilities.

There can be no greater affirmation of a construction company’s reputation for quality craftsmanship than business gained through word of mouth.
Such was the case, when Amanda Stockwell, Managing Director of SBT Group Ltd, contacted New Plymouth based construction company Custom Construction NZ Ltd to undertake an extensive refit project.
SBT Group was relocating its Head Office from Hawera to New Plymouth and the project was essentially the transformation of an old disused warehouse to high-end commercial offices.
Amanda’s key requirement was that the finished project had to be of the highest standard. Nathan Mumby, Custom Construction’s founder and managing director had built his company around quality craftsmanship and professionalism, so when he took the call he said, “that’s great— that’s exactly what we deliver anyway.”
“It was a negotiated contract with us alone, to achieve the best outcome for SBT and their team,” says Nathan.
“The project kicked off early December 2017 and was completed late May 2018, on time, on budget. We did exactly what we said we would do—deliver a high quality finished product, which the customer is very pleased with.”
Custom Construction’s Commercial Project Manager, Carl Sinclair says the project involved a building owned by SBT Group, half of which was existing retail space, the other half being the disused warehouse.
“The warehouse hadn’t been used for a long time,” says Carl. “We were required to turn the warehouse into 650sqm of office space, inclusive of an internal courtyard.”
With the objective of bringing natural light into the office space, the re-design required the removal of a section of roof to create the internal grassed courtyard area, providing the staff with a connection to the outside world.
“Three walls surrounding the courtyard were divided into seven individual work spaces, an open space office area, large kitchen and staff area, two meeting rooms and one executive boardroom,” explains Carl.
Nathan says the office fit-out is the most modern working environment in New Plymouth – based around state of the art management and working practices with break out rooms and access to the courtyard.

Reflecting on the project, Nathan says there is always a challenge when dealing with old buildings.
When the project was being scoped and priced it became apparent the roof needed replacement and an old air-conditioning unit on the rooftop was no longer functional.
“The roof was replaced as part of the project but with current health and safety laws we had to work out how to service a new air-conditioning unit on the roof. Through the design process we brought the unit down onto the ground and eliminated all health and safety issues when servicing it.”
