Hailing from his parents Southland deer farm, Daniel Cunningham moved to Christchurch as a 19 year old, completed his building apprenticeship and found a passion for building beautiful homes and making people happy by turning their dreams into reality.
What’s really inspirational is that this all happened within a space of twelve years and for the last six years Daniel has been successfully operating his own business – Cunningham Builders Ltd – building beautiful homes for his client.“I’m definitely passionate about building,” says Daniel.
“It’s the small things that most people won’t see but if they are done right it just gives the home that seamless look. Right throughout the build we bring the client through the home and go over things. Just being on site with them and seeing the pleasure they get out of it gives us pleasure.”
Based in West Melton, Cunningham Builders primarily operates in that area but stretches through-out Canterbury as projects are presented.
Undertaking a diverse range of residential projects from high-end bespoke builds through to bathroom renovations, decks and landscaping, Cunningham Builders has also completed the occasional light commercial project for residential clients with businesses.
Operating as a close team of four—three qualified builders and an apprentice—with Daniel’s wife Heather in the office, Daniel says the family business is small enough to care but big enough to deliver.“I’m pretty lucky in that I have a team of young guys with a great work ethic.
“ We’ve also established good relationships with small teams of sub contractors that we regularly work with. The main thing is working-in together on a project to get the job done right and to a high standard.”
Daniel prides himself that from the client’s perspective he is a ‘one-stop-shop’—on-site working along side his team, working with the client, responding to emails, pricing and working with project variations—ensuring there is no communication breakdowns. It just works.
Exemplifying everything good about Cunning-ham Builders is a million dollar residential project completed in West Melton earlier this year.Positioned on a large 4635sqm section, the spectacular home is expansive with a 390sqm footprint, complemented by an 110sqm second level sitting above the three-car garage.
Featuring a fusion of stack bond blocks and Shadowclad board over batten as the home’s cladding the exterior creates a striking first impression, offering a glimpse of the inner drama and beauty.Carpeted and lined in exposed ply with black negative detailing, the extra large three-car garage provides access to the upper level.
Substantially a spacious man-cave or games-room, with separate bathroom, both walls and raked cove ceiling in the upper level are also lined in exposed ply. Six large skylights create warmth and natural lighting.
Running the length of the lower level’s open plan dining, kitchen and living rooms cedar-lined ceilings are visually dramatic.“The cedar extends outside lining the wide soffit hanging over the garapa deck,” explains Daniel.
“The deck runs in front of the kitchen and living spaces and also opens out from the lounge to create indoor-outdoor flow. A separate deck opens out from the master bedroom and laundry areas.”An award-winning designer kitchen takes centre stage in the home, with multiple open plan areas separated by wall units and centre islands.
Black non-marking Pressed Panel Dezignatek has been used for much of the kitchen joinery, while the centre island has been crafted using a wood grain finish.Authentic oak flooring used extensively throughout adds to the homes warmth and sense of grandness.
Reflecting on the completion of the home, Daniel says every completed house provides a sense of achievement and accomplishment. “To build a home like this you need a multitude of skills to get things lining up and achieving the finish and detail that is required.”
