Recent projects by Calder Dvelopments include full construction of Fresh Choice Supermarket at Cromwell, design and construction of Placemakers Alexandra, Farm Source, Gore and a large truckstop in Dunedin.

With nearly 40 years in the construction industry, Calder Developments has a proven track record and a solid reputation for delivering building solutions that stand the test of time. The family-run design, construction and engineering company specialises in commercial, industrial and rural buildings throughout Otago and Southland.
Recent upgrades of the company’s pre-cast concrete and steel fabrication plants, and the integration of technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) software used by highly skilled staff means the company can confidently offer complete building and development solutions in-house, says Calder Developments general manager Nick Calder.
“We have specialist designers, quantity surveyors, engineers, project managers and builders all under one roof providing clients with a single point of accountability for any commercial, industrial or rural construction project,” says Nick.
Clients can come to Calders as a one-stop-shop for everything from land development to design and complete build, meaning they don’t have to deal with any number (often as many as six or seven) of other construction consultants or building specialists to achieve their goal.
“We deal with the client right from the start, and because our designs are integrated with the technology from the manufacturing side of our business, we can make the steel and concrete elements at our plants off-site, and they fit together seamlessly on-site making the entire skeleton of large commercial and industrial buildings.”
The process is labour-saving; whereas traditionally some 100 people may have been needed on-site with the various components carried out by various specialist tradespeople, this could be reduced to 50 to 60 by being smarter and using integrated machinery within the company’s manufacturing departments.
“It’s about technology and logistics, rather than boots on site,” says Nick. The upgraded steel fabrication plant is located in Tapanui, which is where Nick’s parents Stephen and Lynne Calder established the business in 1980.
A new shot blaster, and installation of a new state-of-the-art Ficep beam line will increased the steel work capability of the company by roughly three times. In 2016 the company also built a new 2,500 sq m commercial building at Cromwell for production of pre-cast concrete elements and panels.
Sister company Craneworks NZ has 8T, 40T, and 100T mobile cranes available to erect the buildings.Calder Developments also offers construction consultancy services, and a number of times has been called in to “join the dots” on projects for other developers.
