Diversity of projects sets family-owned business apart
Auckland based SMC Construction has just completed a large warehouse project for client Goodman. The 13,000sqm warehouse with 13,500sqm yard in Wiri will be tenanted by NCI Packaging.SMC Construction director Paul Clouston says the project was challenging due to the timeline in which it had to be completed and the size of the project.
Work commenced in October 2018 and the project was finished a year later. Made from precast concrete slab and structural steel, SMC Construction’s familiarity and experience with these types of builds ensured the project ran smoothly due to sound project management.
SMC Constructionn has worked on a number of projects for long term clients Goodman, developer of the award-winning Highbrook Business Park in East Tamaki, home to over 80 businesses. SMC Construction has been working in this development for a number of years, most recently completing a four storey car park building.
Paul says that SMC Construction’s expertise really came to the fore working with contractors to convert the design from precast concrete and structural steel to an in-situ all concrete building.“This was due to the fact the building was located in a marine zone and it was felt that concrete would be a better long-term solution for the client,” he explains.
Based in Auckland SMC Construction was started in 2001 by Paul, who has extensive experience in the construction industry dating back to 1971 when he commenced his career as a quantity surveyor before progressing to a chief quantity surveyor position specialising in commercial and government department projects throughout New Zealand and the Pacifi c Islands.
SMC Construction has since grown and Paul says it is the diversity of projects the company can undertake that sets it apart – educational, com-mercial, healthcare, hospitality, interiors remedial and residential.
The strong family owned nature of the business also makes SMC Construction special with Paul’s son Jonathon also a director. While Paul takes on a quantity surveying role in the business along with overall management and is directly involved in all projects from the tendering process through to completion, Jonathon works as chief construction project manager on all projects.
Paul says this gives a very personal service, with clients having direct access to a company director on their project. Coupled with a team of loyal staff who are employed by the business, including an experienced management team and an extensive network of sub-contractors, this results in good control over quality and timing of projects.
It is no surprise that the company has many repeat clients, which Paul takes as a source of pride in the high quality outcomes that SMC Construction is consistently producing.Paul is especially proud of the fact that returning clients account for more than 80% of business every year.
He says this is because SMC Construction understands how important trust is in a client/contractor relationship. “We have a track record of integrity, expertise and customer satisfaction. “Our clients value the relationship we build with them and recognize our commitment to quality, budget and schedule.
“With a combination of many years trade experience and academic qualifications within the company, SMC is able to provide a comprehensive project management service to our clients. “We are proud that clients who work with us for one project return to SMC Construction for their future construction needs.”
