Quality, affordable homes the focus

Specialising in the design and build of homes and catering for all budgets, Ridge Homes is nearing completion of its new show home in Lincoln’s modern residential Te Whariki development.

Showcasing attention to detail and quality craftsmanship, the traditionally styled four-bedroom home opens a window to what buyers can expect from a family home built by the Ridge Homes’ team.

Built on an engineered rib-raft foundation, the 210sqm home offers north facing living spaces that include designer kitchen, dining and family lounge area, with four generous bedrooms positioned at the home’s south end.

Complete with walk in robe and en-suite, the north facing master bedroom is positioned for the sun, with large bi-fold doors leading out to a private deck area. Stone bench tops, Commercial Grade Westing-house appliances and tiled bathrooms add to the home’s touch of class – all included in the cost effective house and land package available at $640,000.

Adding to the value, an adjoining double car garage contains a generous storage attic accessible by a neat foldaway attic ladder. The show home uses a durable but lightweight concrete Rockcote Integra façade system as the primary exterior cladding, with horizontal linear board as a feature.

Managing Director, John Shearer, explains that while Ridge Homes would always recommend a traditional north facing home as a standard home configuration, clients have the scope to make internal changes within the standard building envelope – ensuring the home is kept within an affordable price point.

“We have an in-house architectural designer who can provide clients with experienced guidance when making design decisions to ensure the home remains within their budget – something that is so important for people building their first home.”

Involved in construction, property development and residential town planning since 2011, John founded Ridge Homes Ltd in 2015, immersing himself in house and land packages, high-density apartment buildings and property development ever since.

Focused on offering quality affordable housing, Ridge Homes purchased seven 800sqm sections in Christchurch East not long after opening its doors for business, building a number of houses that were all sold off the plans.

Quality, affordable homes the focus

Ridge Homes has a range of designs that clients can select from.

“Our strength is our knowledge and efficiency in creating successful residential urban developments from purchasing the right sites, getting involved in the early stages of development and putting quality affordable homes on those sites. We have a number of completed homes now available for sale around Christchurch with others under construction.”

Surrounding himself with the right people has also been a cornerstone of success for John and his building company.“We have a reliable team of experienced builders that subcontract to us for all of our projects and my project manager, Jamie van der Klei, is an integral part of the team.

“He has 16 years experience both as a project manager and qualified builder with LBP in Christ-church. Jamie is still very much hands on with the tools.”

The other person that is a core part of the team is John’s father, Hugh Shearer – an experienced architectural designer.“My father brings considerable design experience to the business ensuring the right design for the site, the house is correctly positioned on the site and that the space within the house is fully optimised.

We have a range of designs that clients can select from for use on sites that we have access to throughout Christchurch, enabling us to give the client a price. “We can then offer the client a number of things that can be changed while keeping it within the price point.”

In addition to the show home, Ridge Homes has two more sections at Te Whariki destined for ‘turn-key’ packages with the plans currently at council awaiting consent.

“Both homes will be built to an affordable level with one being under $550,000 making it eligible for the First Home grant and the use of kiwi saver for first homebuyers. The other home will be a four-bedroom family home, priced at $640,000 – house and land package. “While both homes are very similar in spec, if a buyer gets in early enough some customization can be made to the spec and layout.”

John understands that quality, liveability and affordability are key requirements for first homebuyers.“I love this work – I really love creating and building high quality homes that everyone is proud of – the proof is in the pudding.”
