The residential house experts in Motueka

Another new home under construction in Motueka.

From the front gate to the back fence and everything in between, the team at R Fry Builders has residential construction covered in Motueka.

The team has recently completed a new build for a Wellington based client, which started out as one of the company’s standard house and land pack-ages, and when purchased, the plan was tweaked to turn it into the client’s dream retirement home.

“It was a good sized town section, 750sqm which is a reasonable size for Motueka,” says R Fry Buildersmanging director Ruben Fry.

“They liked that aspect and they liked the location as well.”

Designed by Ruben’s regular architectural designer, Nelson’s Gowans Walters and Associates, the 280sqm four bedroom plus hobby room classically-styled home has a low maintenance theme for its retired owners.

400sqm and $20,000 worth of TigerTurf artificial grass makes up the lawn, with a small raised veggie garden allowing the couple to get in some quality gardening time and still never need to mow or water their lawn.

PVC fencing from Durafence NZ will stand up to New Zealand’s harsh UV sunlight for many years to come, and never require painting.

It was the first Durafence installation for the R Fry Builders team, with the owners liking the look of one they saw at a show home in Wellington, but not yet common in the Nelson region.

“It was a nice fence to build, with a modular system that was easy to put up, even though it was the first time we’d seen one in this area.”

The flat site posed no challenges for R Fry Builders, nor did the construction of a Gowans Walters and Associates design, which the company does all the time.

Liaising with an out-of-town client was more of a challenge, but two site visits and regular communication have resulted in everything to the client’s liking.

None of the colours chosen were standard colours, so R Fry Builders made one off orders for the fencing and the Colorsteel roofing.

Ruben has been building for more than 10 years in the Nelson/Tasman region, starting his apprenticeship in Nelson and finishing it off back home in Motueka.

He trained in architecturally designed construction, then went to work for a company which produced its own house and land packages.

“That’s where I learned about house and land packages, that’s what I enjoyed, and we’re now trying to follow that same model.”

But house-and-land packages are costly and since R Fry Builders has only been operating for four years, Ruben is still subsidising them with other residential construction projects, with the intention of eventually building solely house and land packages.

“They’re just so rewarding,” he says. “Building an architecturally designed home is a long game, you’re on the one site often for more than a year.

Contracting to housing companies is the opposite, you go in, build the house, then leave and never get to see it finished.

“When we do our own houses, we can really see the progress, at the end of the week and at the end of the job.

“We’re landscaping, concreting, and everything and we get a real sense of satisfaction and pride knowing we did every aspect of the project ourselves.”
