A proud 50 years of fine engineering
In 2019 Otahuhu Engineering celebrates 50 years in business. It’s a real milestone for the company, that was started in 1969 by Peter Cranch, a toolmaker.
The factory the company presently operates from was built in the mid-1980s. Peter’s son Tony owns the business today after taking over from his father around 10 years ago.
Tony says he virtually grew up in the business, helping his Dad out during school holidays. Tony qualified as an engineer after leaving school and when he took the reins of Otahuhu Engineering he brought a more modern approach to the business, investing in new technology.
As a result the company was able to take on more complex projects, often the projects others would not want to do due to their challenging nature.
Tony says that it is the ability of Otahuhu Engineering to complete a diverse range of work which has seen the company go from strength to strength over the decades. “We have changed, adapted and think outside the square,” he says. The company has often gone the extra mile when needed.
For example in the late 80s when Auckland experienced severe power outages Otahuhu Engineering worked 24 hour shifts for a month to complete the transformer boxes and brackets to take the Penrose to city power cable from underground to overhead. This dedication is partly due to the family nature of the business:
“We have put a lot of heart and soul into this company,” says Tony. “This reflects in how we look after customers, getting the job done right and going the extra mile when needed.”
He also credits Otahuhu Engineering’s loyal, talented and hard working staff as having played a key role in the company’s success over the decades. Several years ago a staff member retired who had worked for the company for 25 years.
The longest serving staff member currently has clocked up 15 years. Tony says that decades of experience solving the engineering problems of companies requires not only the skills and experience of the team, backed by a fully-equipped workshop but also unique problem-solving abilities.
“This is where we really excel, consistently exceeding the expectations of our clients.” Otahuhu Engineering offers a range of services including engineering design, manufacturing, onsite machining, maintenance and repairs, architectural steelwork and lifting equipment and cranes.
Most work is one-off specialised repairs and maintenance work. The company also offers portable milling machines, lathes and line boring equipment to complete work on-site. With many long term clients, Otahuhu Engineering is busy and experiencing steady growth.
Tony is proud to continue the legacy left by his father, who sadly passed away recently. “There are not many companies who have been around for 50 years. It’s quite special.”
