Open Country goes from strength to strength
For the past 15 years, Open Country has been an integral part of the New Zealand dairy landscape and today is the country’s largest independent manufacturer of dairy ingredients.
Majority owned by the Talley family of Nelson; Open Country was founded with the strong belief that dairy farmers in New Zealand should be able to choose their dairy processor.
This has proven a successful business model with almost 1000 farmers now delivering their high-quality milk to one of its four manufacturing sites across New Zealand, with the company in turn manufacturing high quality dairy ingredients with state-of-the-art technology.
Open Country operates seven powder dryers and a cheese plant from its sites in the Waikato, Taranaki and Southland, which are three of the preeminent dairying regions in New Zealand.
These factories process 1.8 billion litres of milk annually to produce an extensive range of whole milk powders, skim milk powders, organic milk powders, whey protein concentrates, anhydrous milk fat, and cheeses.
With current capacity of more than 300,000 tonnes of dairy ingredients available in the 2019/20 season, it is able to provide its customers with a stable supply of the products they need. Open Country exports to over 50 markets with the key export regions being Asia, South East Asia, Middle East and North Africa.
Throughout the supply chain and manufacturing and packaging processes, food safety and quality are an absolute priority. All manufacturing plants have achieved the highest level of approval from the New Zealand Government’s Dairy Compliance Department, the Ministry for Primary Industries and are FSSC 22000 accredited.
FSSC 22000 is globally recognised and provides our customers with quality assurance for their brands. It certifies that Open Country’s Food Safety and Quality Management Systems follow global standards and provide full control from milk supply through to finished product, which means that there is traceability and control over the entire supply chain.
Chief executive Steve Koekemoer says Open Country Dairy is committed to operating sustain-ably, environmentally, socially and economically. “We foster a culture of continuous improvement to ensure a sustainable future for food supply.”
The company is not only the largest independent manufacturer of dairy products in New Zealand, but is also the second largest whole milk powder exporter in the world.Steve anticipates ongoing strong global demand for New Zealand dairy products based on product provenance, quality and stringent food safety systems.
“That will continue in the foreseeable future. We wouldn’t be investing if we didn’t strongly believe that demand will continue for high quality dairy products from New Zealand.”
This demand has underpinned Open Country’s present considerable capital investment programme which has a strong focus on world class environmental initiatives and highly innovative wastewater technology.
