Daniel and Michelle Fogden are enjoying life back on familiar territory having returned to settle at Mangawhai, 26km north-east of Wellsford, following a shift south to Christchurch in 2012.

It takes time to establish a building business and though Michelle says the building scene generally has slowed down a little both her and Daniel are happy with what they have achieved since returning in 2017.

“We first established ourselves working as contract builders for group housing companies and that was a good first step, allowing us time to also build our own client base over this period.”

Today, Fogden Builders concentrates more and more on its own client builds and to assist them, they have a team of reliable building subcontractors and architects. It’s a time of transition as the reputation of the business establishes itself.

Michelle says she is not surprised at the growing interest from clients directly to engage Daniel’s services as a residential builder.“He’s been building since age 15 and is just very passionate about the whole industry. He is quite driven and always wants to give clients the very best experience possible,” she says.

“He cares very much about the high standard of workman-ship he expects of himself and his team and always strives to deliver a build according to schedule.”While Daniel is actively engaged on site, Michelle has increasingly stepped in to take care of necessary administration and to nurture the marketing of a building business they are each proud of.

“It means that increasingly Daniel has time to engage in steering the company into the future and we hope, if things continue to grow, that we will be in a position to take on full-time employees to give Daniel important time off the tools.” Last year was a productive one with two good size new build contracts undertaken.

One of these, the Stewart residence, at 27 Calla Street Maungaturoto has just been completed. The home has a substantial foot-print of 314m2 and has five bedrooms, two ensuite bathrooms, a main bathroom, bar and easy fl ow open living dining spaces.

There are some especially appealing design elements the architect included, giving the home a colonial style look. Skirting boards and architraves give a nod to that era which extends to historical architraves on the exterior of the windows.

“I think the design works very well and the home has a real sense of presence and solidarity to it.”The build began in May 2019 and has gone well, partly due to Daniel also inputting into the original design. “This helped achieve the best possible outcome for our clients with respect to their budget.”

Inside, the widespread use of tiles is a real feature as well. Cladding is painted bricks, a building form not often seen, the home has been thoughtfully designed to gain the maximum use of space and best situation on its site. As for 2020, Michelle says they are confident that referrals will continue to grow.

“We’re fortunate because when things are a little quieter Daniel can make his building services available to other subcontractors, so it’s a system that works well at this time as we build the business.” Fogden Builders work over a geographic extending from Whangarei in the North to Warkworth in the South.
