Subdivision gets the personal touch
Glen Smith has managed every aspect of the Quail Rise project - from the early planning stages, through site works and landscaping, and the soon-to-be-completed building of the spec home.

Developing the Quail Rise lifestyle subdivision at Balcairn in North Canterbury has allowed builder Glen Smith, of Excel Design & Build Ltd, to mix business with pleasure.

Following the completion of a 300sqm spec house on the subdivision, Glen will turn his sights to a more personal aspect of the development, when he builds his own home on the remaining 15-acres.

Over thirty years in the building industry, Glen has turned his hand to almost every aspect of the trade.

He has taken on everything from boutique and heritage renovations, to house extensions, tiny homes and portable units, right through to new builds and rural property development.

He’s even invented a specialised bracket that is certified for use throughout New Zealand. His ‘Excel Bracket’ allows pitched roofs to be extended when building pergolas or sunroofs.

It can be used in place of support posts, taking the load from existing trusses and removing the need for posts that could disrupt a view, or the fl ow of a space.

Based in Sefton/Balcairn, Glen has undertaken significant building projects for Hurunui District Council, including the refurbishment of the historic Amberley Cottage at Chamberlain Park on State Highway 1.

Glen enjoyed working on the local landmark, and looks forward to carrying out further heritage work in the future.

Glen knows that you cannot have a successful business without a great network or suppliers and subcontractors.

He says Hamptons ITM Ferry Road always provides excellent customer service, advising on the best materials and products to suit his requirements, and often delivering on the same day an order is placed.

Solid relationships with clients have been equally important, as much of Glen’s business comes from personal recommendations and return custom.

His satisfied customers praise his ability to listen to what they need, offer effective and economic solu-tions, and deliver quality workmanship on time.

A keen golfer, Glen met many of his valued clients through his local Amberley Golf club.

Excel Design & Build has become a golf club sponsor, providing a prize every week for the longest putt.

Glen has managed every aspect of the Quail Rise project – from the early planning stages, through site works and landscaping, and the soon-to-be-completed building of the spec home.

“Where there was just bare land, I’m now looking out at two finished homes, framing for another, and the spec home nearly finished. We designed the whole property, so it’s very satisfying to see it coming together and looking great.”

Glen is particularly proud of the nature sanctuary that he’s fenced off to exclude stock. It consists of a spring fed creek that Glen has affectionately named Eel Creek, after the native eels that inhabit it.

Continued planting of natives and ongoing pest management will encourage bird species to diversify and grow.

In addition to the pukeko, paradise ducks and occasional kingfishers that have already made Quail Rise home, Glen is looking forward to spotting tui, bellbird, and morepork in future.
