Striking design trumps competition
David Reid Homes Waitaki/South Canterbury franchisees Aaron and Nikki Mackay’s second year with the company has been marked in style.
The couple claimed the 2018 David Reid Homes Home of the Year title at its annual conference in September, after their Oamaru build garnered top place from nearly 3000 nationwide voters.
Nikki credits the award to the house’s striking design elements and a strong focus on quality, an ethos which the Mackay’s feel is important to set them apart in a market where there is no shortage of competitors.
“It was amazing to receive the award, we feel so proud of both our team of great builders, and also all the tradesmen that worked with us to achieve such an impressive house,” Nikki says.
The custom design and build was planned with family living in mind, with its owners requesting a home that would accommodate their busy family lifestyle.
The result is a four bedroom home with a spacious ensuite and family bathroom, separate media room and large, open plan living, kitchen and dining rooms. It makes the most of spectacular westerly views and features a courtyard from which to take them all in.
“Large rocks were brought in for the outdoor living spaces which complement the crisp, sharp lines of the exterior cladding, a mix of Linea and cedar. Cedar has been carried into the home’s interior, creating a stunning contrast with a black, white and grey colour palette throughout.
“The clients loved the finish of the black joinery and hardware, and this flows through the home beautifully.”
The result is also a reflection of the well structured process Aaron and Nikki take all their clients through in order to understand their needs and lifestyle.
They provide complete job pricing, ensuring open communication and realistic expectations while utilising local architectural draftsmen, designers and tradesmen to provide a turn key service of high quality homes that they are proud to stand beside.
Nikki says while the majority of clients use David Reid Homes plan range for inspiration and guidance, most houses are design and build.
The Waitaki/South Canterbury franchise covers a large geographic area from Palmerston through to Timaru and inland to the Mackenzie Country. The Mackay’s own a building company which employs seven staff and contracts to the franchise.
Aaron is a Licensed Building Practitioner who project manages, utilising his 15 years in the building industry. He has built architecturally designed homes in New Zealand and Australia, and now manages his team of builders locally.
“When we first took over the franchise it was an advantage that Aaron had an established company which resulted in word of mouth referrals. From there its really grown and we’ve created a good reputation.”
