Coresteel delivers stylish new winery
When The Wine Studio approached Coresteel Buildings – Marlborough with their requirements for a new winery, area manager Allister Green and his team provided a cost effective solution that maximised the use of space, and future proofed for expansion.
The design brief focused on delivering a stylish but functional winery.
The key was to link the functional and operational work areas of a winery, being the main tank farm with the various plant areas, together with a series of offices, laboratory and staff facilities.
Planning commenced in late 2016, with Coresteel Buildings providing a range of alternative building options.
Early concept designs led to the final design with commencement of the construction of the 400sqm winery and 100sqm offi ce area starting in October 2017.
Allister says the existing ground conditions proved to be the biggest challenge. “In certain locations, the quality of the soil was not overly conducive to constructing a building on top of it, so in some areas we had to remove up to 1.8m of unsuitable material, replacing it with approved hardfill.”
The Coresteel Tapered Box Beam structure was matched with a Kingspan wall and roof panel system, providing an ideal solution to the needs of a winery building.
“The Kingspan panel offers good thermal properties and enables the winery to maintain a consistent internal environment. The product also provided clean lines, a crisp appearance and an easy clean surface.”
Contrasting with the light grey cladding of the winery building, the adjoining office area is clad with a dark coloured corrugate offering a distinctly different design aspect. Another distinct feature is the large window located in the main office area.
Walking through the cedar main entry doors, visitors and staff alike are treated to an almost unrestricted view to the winery area of the building.
Allister says the original winery design focused on being able to adapt to future requirements, allowing the building to expand as the winery business grew.
This forward vision came to fruition when the owners found they needed additional winery capacity to match their business growth. “Soon after completing the original building in 2018, we were asked to design and build a 312sqm extension to the winery building,” says Allister.
“I’m pleased to advise that this has just been completed in time for the 2019 harvest.”
