BMC provides structural, civil and fi re engineering design services to architects, developers, construction companies, commercial property owners, home-owners and both central and local government

Structural and civil engineering firm Batchelar McDougall Consulting’s (BMC) expansion into Invercargill is underpinned by highly skilled staff who are passionate about achieving client-focused outcomes.Managing director Graham McDougall says the Wanaka headquartered company, which also has offices in Queenstown and Christchurch, established the Invercargill office early 2019.

BMC is absolutely committed to the city”, Graham says.“We are here for the long haul. We’ve been working in Invercargill for many, many years undertaking a variety of commercial projects in terms of assessment and strengthening work primarily.”

Projects include several city landmarks such as Westpac, Tuatara Backpackers, and all assessments associated with the HWCP central city development. Recent new build work includes the former St John Anglican church bought by SIT to convert into a $17 million creative arts centre.

For the creative arts centre, BMC was engaged to provide detailed engineering design and construction monitoring services for the strengthening of the building and a new, integrated three storey facility.

“The strengthening requirements for the church involved providing the minimum of visible structure intervention within a limited budget.”BMC analysed the existing structure, solid brick unreinforced masonry, using 3D ETABS software to define stress points and vulnerable elements.

In the model, minimal steel structure was added to stabilise these elements in a logical and consistent way to fit in with existing features.“A point cloud laser scan was utilised to create a 3D building information model, which was used in the creation of structural drawings.”

This project highlights some of the many skills, engineering disciplines and technology involved in any given project, as well as BMC’s strong focus on achieving what is required within sometimes tight time and budget constraints, Graham says. BMChas an accredited drone team who have the capability to fl y, process and analyse highly accurate georeferenced aerial mapping data.

Images can be used to create highly accurate 3D contour maps, 3D point clouds of buildings or land forms and detailed high definition video inspections of difficult to access areas. This is complemented by high-quality ground based 3D and infrared imaging capabilities that generate equivalent information for the internal spaces of structures.

“We deliver all of these services on a diverse range of residential, commercial and community-based building projects throughout New Zealand.”

Opening an office in Invercargill continues BMC’s “organic” but consistently strong growth since it started as a four person operation in Wanaka in 2007 when Graham and Warren Batchelar joined forces.“We started with ourselves and two others.”The company now employs 33 staff over four offices.

While engineering design might be perceived as an impersonal occupation, it is actually a people-based business, Graham says.“We are passionate about engineering and we are passionate about helping people solve problems.

We really live by that. “We use technologies and our network of relationships to be part of that problem solving approach.” This requires collaborating closely not only with clients, but also with other project team members and specialists, a key part of BMC’s way of operating.

BMC’s values commit it to not only delivering high quality outcomes, but also to helping people and acting collaboratively through all phases of a project. After 12 years of growing the company with a strong ethos of investing in its staff, BMC’s directors are excited about the future and seeing the business continue to flourish.
