Company evolves as needs change
Since establishing B H Builders in 2014 Brendon Hastie has experienced a pattern of the company growing and shrinking in numbers to find a structure he is now happy with.
He has nine builders, split into three crews and says this works well for the amount of work he ideally wants to have on his books at any one time.
“With three teams we can have two or three descent size jobs at various stages of completion on the go at any one time,” says Brendon.
“That feels like a comfortable amount of work and ensures the quality we are proud to have built our reputation on remains for each project.”
B H Builders services the Wellington region, concentrating mainly on residential new builds, upgrades along with commercial fit-outs.
It’s been a busy time in terms of evolving the company, with the decision to take on a decorating company. Brendon says there were good reasons for this development.
“I was getting increasingly frustrated with some independent decorators who wouldn’t do the work to an acceptable standard or at a time that worked for the whole building programme.”
Further developments lie ahead for Brendon and the team as a property development arm of the company emerges. For Brendon this is a very positive evolution. “I always wanted to get to the stage where we were building and renovating our own homes so it is good to be heading in this direction.”
When asked what he attributes his success to and what makes a builder successful Brendon says it comes down to having an eye for detail and willingness to always improve their work. When Business Central spoke with Brendon a new build in Johnsonville was nearing completion.
He describes the two bedroom entertainers delight home as a dream home for the couple who stamped the homes design with features they especially wanted.
“It has an entertainers kitchen and living spaces including an outdoor deck with a Louvretec Canopy. “The home is going to work really well for their lifestyle and it was a pleasure to be able to build what they wanted.”
B H Builders built two town-houses for a client a couple of years ago and are about to return to the site in Newtown to build a further two.
Brendon values those who work hard in the trades and while tending to his own company and its development he is also keen to help other individuals establish their own businesses and grow their careers.
It’s a sentiment shared by Brendon and his wife in terms of caring for their staff and wanting to see them thrive in the building sector.
When the couple have time off from their individual jobs they put time and energy into doing up an old home in Waitangirua in Porirua. “We are really enjoying this project, breathing new life into an old home and hopefully the street.”
Brendon says the new era B H Builders is entering is something he is looking forward to, having worked hard to reach this point in a relatively short period of time. “It will be great having the opportunity to be our own client”.
