A proud 40 years in construction
One of many of Bushnell Builders’ projects undertaken in the Christchurch community, The Avondale Golf Club.

Now celebrating 40 years of delivering commercial and residential construction projects to Christchurch and Canterbury, key to the success of Bushnell Builders is the maintenance of strong relationships with clients, consultants, and subcontractors.
Matt Bushnell started the company as a sole trader in 1979.
Once he employed an inhouse quantity surveyor, his business started to boom and was nurtured by his keen business acumen.
Lance Austin joined the team after about 10 years, eventually going in to partnership with Matt then buying the company outright.
Now running a team of 30 builders and six in the office, Bushnell Builders is a real family affair.
Lance is joined by his three sons, project manager Brad, carpenter Camden, and apprentice Corey.
The Bushnell family is well represented too with Matt’s nephew and quantity surveyor Eliot Bushnell, and his cousin and financial controller Dave McGibbon recently taking the position over from his father Nigel.
Other key members of the team have been with the company for 20 years so if not part of the family, are at least part of the furniture.
Bushnell Builders’ bread and butter is in commercial construction, with high-end architectural homes frequently thrown into the mix for good measure.
Brad says today’s market is tight and competition is fierce since the Christchurch earthquakes.
“Budgeting and pricing is a huge factor for us because in a tight market, you can’t have any is-sues in that area. You’ve got to be on the ball. The processes we’ve been updating recently are helping us to do that.”
Bushnell Builders’ stable and long-serving work-force has the skills necessary to cover the diversity of Canterbury commercial building projects.
“Our design and build process is simple and flexible,” Brad says.
“We employ the construction consultants, managing and simplifying the design development and construction process. This provides significantly greater flexibility in design and ensures the build-ability of the project.”
Bushnell Builders has delivered a significant number of multi-occupancy housing units and architectural housing projects.
A seamless service is provided from initial design proposals, project costing and obtaining consents, to construction and code compliance certification at completion.
“This process reduces client costs,” Brad says.  Our design and build ensures our clients work with the builder to achieve a completed project, designed to their requirements, and built within their timeframe and budget.”
Although, Registered Master Builder, Bushnell Builders’ business is in construction, the idea of building a better community has always been its mandate.
Being locally owned and operated and placing great importance on family is reflected in Bushnell Builders company culture.
As well as giving back to the community with donations to various sporting and health foundations, Bushnell Builders is now completing a community project with the build of a new changing rooms and clubhouse for Pleasant Point Yacht Club at South New Brighton.

“We did a lot of work with them on budgeting, cost savings, and working with the subcontractors to get them a deal and make sure the job could go ahead.”
