Flexibility the key to good outcomes – Kiwi Designed Homes

“For example in Auckland, where build prices are high, it can be a better option for KDH to build a home in Hamilton and transport it to the site, likewise for homes in difficult or remote locations.”

The ratio of prefab houses is increasing for Hamilton based builder Kiwi Designed Homes (KDH), also known as Kiwi Transportable Homes.

The company offers both traditional homes and prefabricated options to cater to its customers varying requirements. Company director Steve Moore, who runs the company with business partner Blair Ridley, says that prefab homes can be cheaper to construct depending on the market they are heading into.

“For example in Auckland, where build prices are high, it can be a better option for KDH to build a home in Hamilton and transport it to the site, likewise for homes in difficult or remote locations. It really depends on the particular build project and that’s where KDH can help advise customers as to the best option,” he says.

Prefab plans range from 60-130sqm and include two to four bedrooms. James Hardie 180 weatherboard comes as standard but they can be built with any type of cladding the customers desires.

Kiwi Transportable Homes was started over 15 years ago by the Ridley family. Steve bought into the company around three years ago when it was rebranded as KDH to reflect the types of homes it builds: transportable, lifestyle and contemporary.

KDH offers a range of existing, new and updated plans for customers to select from or can undertake a complete design and build project.

Steve says that the process is very flexible with customers able to make any changes they like to any of the offered plans to get their ideal home.

ustomers can also bring their own plans. KDH also offers a small number of house and land packages.

KDH employs a team of nine plus contractors as required. Notably there is no traditional salesperson.

“Our whole team has excellent technical knowledge of all our products so our customers can talk to anyone and get their questions answered,” he says.

“For example, you can talk to Irene on the front desk who can advise on pricing, designs, specifications and even council requirements,” says Steve.
“What’s more all our tradespeople are time served, qualified and stand by the quality and care they put into building each home. We have a close knit team who work together to build quality, designer homes built to last.”

He says the company’s values are an important aspect: being good to work with, honest and open, offering great value, high quality and focusing on the family.

“We want our customers’ experience with us to be an enjoyable one so that means no surprises and a fair price for a great quality product.

“As their home is built around their family so is our business offering a personal one of a kind service.”

This means a stress-free building experience is a strong focus: “As a company we work together to make a difference to our customers. We deliver a quality product with a focus of ensuring the entire build is a stress free experience for them.”

KDH builds in Hamilton, Raglan, down to Cambridge and over to Tahuna. Prefab homes can be transported to virtually anywhere in the North Island.
The company is a member of Master Builders and PrefabNZ.

All homes come with a 10 Year Master Build Guarantee and KDH also has comprehensive contract works, public liability and transportation insurance (for the transportable range only) for added protection and peace of mind for customers.

An additional nice touch is that with every KDH Home built the new owners receive their own sponsorship pack from Kiwi Encounter as KDH sponsor a kiwi chick for each client.

“Our clients receive a pack with the history of their kiwi chick and a visit to Rainbow Springs in Rotorua.

“As passionate New Zealanders, KDH have been active supporters of Kiwi Encounter at Rainbow Springs since 2007.”

With a large number of projects underway – 26 with more due to start – business is busy for KDH with no signs of letting up.

“Word of mouth has always been strong for us so that’s a good sign that we are delivering on our customers expectations. We have a great pipeline of work ahead.”
