Community, staff focus at the core of success
McKay Cartage has taken the lead to create a Bulk Cartage Training Programme, which it hopes to have recognised nationally.
Established in conjunction with McInnes Driver Training Gisborne, the programme specifically addresses the unique requirements of bulk cartage “Employees are at the heart of our business. This programme indicates how central staff are to the success of the business as a whole,” says McKay Cartage owner Kevin McKay.
Other people friendly initiatives include annual medicals and life insurance for all of the McKay Cartage team and gym memberships.
Kevin says that McKay Cartage also looks beyond its staff and to the communities it works within.
It is heavily involved in supporting the communities of the East Coast through donations to local sports and other clubs.
It offers free delivery of sand or bark to any school, kohanga, kindy, playcentre up the East Coast, and assisted with filling the school pool so the children could do their swimming lessons.
“We put back as much as we can into these communities that we work and live in as we recognise that it’s the foundation for our staff and their families,” he says.
It is this kind of focus that resulted in McKay Cartage winning the Contractor of the Year award at the Eastland Wood Council 2019 Forestry Awards.
The company also won the category in 2012 and 2018 indicating the high levels of professionalism it consistently operates at.
Kevin says that McKay Cartage has set itself apart by delivering excellent service.
As an example being available and committed to delivering on projects that are not planned, are external to core business and are required on short notice such as when natural weather events happen and McKay Cartage can help get roads open quickly.
“This demonstrates our flexibility and responsiveness, something our customers really appreciate,” he says.
Kevin says that one feature of working with McKay Cartage is the on-going and regular communication to pro-actively identify any issues and develop solutions on how to improve working relationships and outcomes.
McKay Cartage also takes environmental performance as seriously as it does production and delivery.
The company’s many accreditations also reflect this focus on delivering a top quality service and include ACC Fleetsaver Gold and WSMP ACC Tertiary Accreditation, SHE Accreditation (a H&S pre-qualification process) and being an ISN Approved Contractor.
The company is also within the top 5% nationwide for Eroad’s five star drivers (this is out of 5000 New Zealand companies and their staff), holds a five star Operator Rating System rating and is the highest ranking company for Traction Plus in New Zealand.
Kevin McKay started with Ernslaw One Ltd in 2008 with one truck.
His initial work was bulk cartage of metal into Makomako forest.
Over the years Kevin has expanded his operations and now is the sole bulk cartage supplier for Ernslaw One with up to eight bulk units working across Ernslaw forests stretching from Mangatu to Hauturu.
Kevin has also recently invested in a 13 tonne digger to assist with maintenance works in the Ernslaw estates inland from Tokomaru Bay servicing up to four harvesting crews.
He says it is McKay Cartage’s commitment to continuous improvement, professionalism, and passion for its staff and the communities they live in which has resulted in the continued delivery of excellent performance and results.
