Firm reaps rewards on the Kapiti Coast
A commitment to excellence in plumbing is the key to Peter Jackson Plumbing’s 23 years of success on the Kapiti Coast.
The award winning plumbing/gas-fitting/drainlaying company is committed to making their loyal customers lives a little easier by taking the stress out of the job.
Sonya and Peter Jackson say when they started out they made the decision to keep their standards high and keep their customers happy, which also meant Peter Jackson Plumbing needed to be dedicated to the Kapiti Coast.
Peter initially operated on his own, but as the demand for their services grew, Peter was able to take on staff.
First he concentrated on employing qualified plumbers to ensure they would provide the level of service he expected, and as the business grew that has included taking on, and training apprentices.
“Pete was always grateful for being given a start as an apprentice plumber and had in mind the idea that he would like to pay that experience forward by employing and training his own apprentices,” says Sonya.
“It’s a rewarding process. In total, through the years he’s helped nine apprentices through their qualifications,” she says.
Sonya describes the world of plumbing, drainage and gas-fitting as a great world to be involved in; something a young tradesperson can always fall back on.
“These are trades that are always sought after and the apprenticeship pathway is great in terms of being paid to get qualified. These days changes in the qualification framework has extended the apprenticeship programme to five years, covering plumbing, gas-fitting and drainage.”
Peter is also an EECA-approved Solar Installer to help with anyone who wants to utilise the Solar from the sun to heat their hot water. Peter Jackson Plumbing offers a 24/7 call-out service as its essential clients can get their plumbing fixed as soon as possible especially when emergencies arise.
While Peter is involved in discussing projects with clients and quoting along with time ‘on the tools’ helping the team, Sonya takes care of the myriad of administrative responsibilities that go with operating a successful business.
Another facet of the company’s life is in dealing with all the issues that are presenting these day from the installation, back in the 70’s, of Dux Qest, a first generation plastic plumbing piping technology that is now presenting with huge issues, when it bursts due to wear and tear.
“It’s been a really awful situation for many home-owners who didn’t necessarily even know this product was used throughout their home.
“We’ve had many a situation when a homeowner has come home from being away to find their home literally flooded.”
Peter featured on a TVNZ1 News feature on the issue and says “the best part is that we can come in and repipe the entire house usually within two-days with minimal intervention into walls.
“It’s become a real speciality within the range of services we offer, and can organise any painting repairs if necessary.”
Asked what the future holds Sonya responds philosophically.
“Our objective is to be our best, not the biggest, and we are always looking for ways to be the best we can be.
“We do this by continually reviewing our performance and dealing with any issues that may crop up from time to time.”
And no job is too big or small either. Sonya recalls one job that really said it all about what service means.
“We were contacted by an elderly lady who had tried on several occasions to get her regular plumber to deal with a minor issue of water-flow.
“She had got to the point where she felt she couldn’t phone him again, so she contacted us and we fixed the problem the same day. She phoned me later in tears to say just what a relief it was to have this matter resolved.”
Much bigger projects of late include the plumbing, gas fitting and drainage for Takiri House in Coastlands, and the new Laundramat in Coastlands. Sonya said she and Pete are especially proud of some milestones in their professional life, including receiving the Electra Excellence award for Small Business of the Year 2012, which resulted in part from really focussing a few years earlier on making sure the business was working efficiently.
This was topped-off in 2016 by receiving the NZ Master Plumber of the Year title, and added to by the Electra 2018 Excellence Award for Medium Business of the Year.
