Busy firm rises to the challenge
Black Rocks Construction’s fi rst project was this new cedar-clad house in Kerikeri.

Kerikeri builders Tom Slack and Sam Corbett are growing their new business Black Rocks Construction, having built five new homes and completed five renovation projects in their first two years of business, they are currently working on three new homes and looking to do more challenging and interesting projects.
Tom and Sam saw an opportunity in Kerikeri’s construction market for a new residential building company.
Tom is a qualified builder who spent six years in London prior to returning home to set up Black Rocks Construction with Sam.
He gained experience in different construction methods as he worked on loft conversions in the UK. Sam has previously owned a local transport and logistics company.
He is a qualified builder with a background in earthworks, providing Black Rocks Construction with a valuable insight into construction programmes and what’s going on underneath the homes they build.
Black Rocks Construction focuses on the residential construction market with alterations and new builds, including architecturally designed and high end projects. Black Rocks Construction’s first project was a good eight month build of a new house in Kerikeri.
Set down a steep driveway and underneath a canopy of native bush, the 230sqm two storey home commands amazing views over the whole area.
A concept from a local designer and verging on the architectural with the attention to detail and level of finishing required, the home is clad with cedar and includes negative detail plywood throughout the interior.
Tom and Sam enjoyed rising to the challenge the project presented them, and they have since completed an 80sqm, architecturally designed studio with commanding views over the Bay of Islands.
“It would be great to pick up a bigger job that was architecturally designed,” Tom says. “We love the interesting projects where you really have to think about what you’re doing.
“You’re not just building off a housing company plan, but going through an organic process that can change as construction progresses.
“We put a lot of effort into our attention to detail, and working to a higher level of finishing requires that.”
Black Rocks Construction has been running a team of four including Tom and Sam, plus another qualified builder and one labourer. An apprentice is now taking part in a trial with the company.
“There is a lot of work going on in our area and it’s hard to find experienced builders,” Sam says. “Labourers aren’t hard to find but good qualified builders are.
“It seems in the past couple of years, all the qualified and experienced builders have realised the same thing we have and gone out on their own.” With three new homes underway, Tom and Sam each manage different stages of their builds.
