Modern engineering requires out of the box solutions, clever design and versatility. That’s where Wellington based Aztech Engineering delivers and has been doing so for nearly 15 years.
Based in Petone the company operates as a general engineering and welding company and was started by engineers Bruce Hollow and Nathan Brown in 2004.
Bruce says that Aztech Engineering is now one of the most versatile general engineering companies in New Zealand, with both design and construction capability encompassing all classes of machine shop work, heavy steel fabrication and rolling, profile cutting and sheet metal work.
He says the company sets itself apart in its modern approach to building relationships, which Bruce describes as a personal, friendly way of dealing with both clients and staff alike.
Aztech Engineering employs a team of around 30 including engineering draftsmen and project managers along with apprentices to train the next generation.
Bruce credits the high levels of expertise his team offers as a key reason that Aztech Engineering has such a large base of regular clients.
Bruce and Nathan take on a management role dealing with quoting, tendering and setting up each job then monitoring quality with regular site visits. There are four main divisions in the company. General engineering sees the team tackle basically anything made out of steel.
Pipework fitting and mechanical services includes pipelines for the oil and gas industry, building services, plant room chillers, heating and ventilation. The structural engineering division tackles new builds and seismic upgrades.
The company also undertakes sheet metal work in aluminium, stainless steel and light gauge steel and the site services division takes care of jobs such as plant breakdowns, gantry crane inspection and repairs, general maintenance and inspections.
Aztech Engineering is supported by sister company Global Welding, which sells welding machines and consumables and safety equipment.
By completing most work in-house, and only subcontracting specialised minor aspects, this allows Aztech Engineering to maintain consistently high quality work. Bruce says that health and safety is a priority and Aztech Engineering is a member of Site Safe.
The company is working towards ISO 9001 accreditation. By always achieving the client’s objectives, Aztech Engineering’s primary growth has been in the oil and gas industry and seismic upgrades of industrial sites along with building construction mechanical services and fabrication and welding.
The types of projects Aztech Engineering completes are diverse and include fabricating the steel structures to replace the old wooden masts for KiwiRail upgrades of its electric rail system. The project was significant and required over 2000 tonnes of steel.
Z Energy is a regular client and Aztech Engineering takes care of a large portion of the maintenance, upgrades and pipe modifications for Z Energy’s bulk storage terminals, including a $2.6m fire protection upgrade of the Seaview terminal.
Another recent project was designing and manufacturing a tunnel cleaning spray system for the Otira Tunnel.
Other clients include Winstone Aggregates (Aztech Engineering has two full time staff based at the Wellington site on nightshift), CentrePort Wellington, Armstrong Downes, Fulton Hogan, John Holland joint venture and Downer EDI.
Bruce says that the company’s services are in high demand and its present 900 square metre facility is unsuited to cater to further growth so they are looking to double the capacity of their workshop in the near future.
