Defined by versatility, multi talented Dunedin business Action Engineering Ltd is serving a growing nationwide market and is itself in a growth phase.
CEO Mark Cameron says the company is taking on new staff and has increased automation and technology across its three adjacent workshops, which cover 4500sqm, or half a city block, in Dunedin’s waterfront industrial area.
Mark says strong leadership and governance by its board, chaired by Graham Crombie, is driving the on-going growth of the firm.
All board members have participated in personal development programmes such as the Governance Development offered by the Institute of Directors. The company’s three executive directors and owners of the business are all qualified tradesmen.
“One of our biggest drivers is to provide governance of the highest standards, creating a work environment where our team starts each day with a sense of purpose and ends each day with a sense of accomplishment.
“We tend to become involved in technically challenging projects that capture our imagination and we’ve become known for delivering outstanding quality, safety and innovation.”
Civil and mechanical projects involving treatment processes for both potable water and sewage is the core business of the multi-faceted company. “For the last 28 years, we’ve largely concentrated on projects that move liquids or process liquids,” Mark says.
“This can involve industrial processes, irrigation schemes, or water and waste water treatment systems for both municipal and industrial clients. We’ve just completed work on a major irrigation scheme, involving steel pipe-work of up to 2.5metres in diameter.”
Action Engineering’s broad portfolio also includes marine and road transport engineering; structural steel fabrication and on-site erection and general engineering.
In conjunction with others, Action Engineering has pioneered technology in anaerobic systems, bio-gas and in the treatment of water and waste water.
“We’ve commissioned over 80 installations and each one has been unique in terms of the design, operational and manufacturing processes we’ve needed to consider.”
While most projects are completed in New Zealand, Mark says the company has provided solutions for projects in South Africa, Indonesia, Australia, China, and the Pacific Islands.
On the structural side of the business, Mark says the team has been very busy with a variety of high profile projects all around Otago, including the Esplanade Apartments and major work in the Distinction Hotel in Dunedin, the new Jucy Hotel and Henrys bottle store in Queenstown.
Ensuring Action Engineering staff arrive home safely every day is of paramount importance. Action Engineering has achieved the top endorsement as part of the ACC Work Safety Management Practices scheme.
Its health and safety systems have been audited and achieved tertiary level for the last 9 years: the highest standard available.
Proud to be Site Safe members for the past 20 years, Mark says Action Engineering has adopted many of Site Safe’s processes into its operation, including the Site-Specific Safety Plan templates.
“Many staff are constantly working in a comparatively dangerous environment,” explains Mark.
“Our team can be repairing ships, working at great heights or working around large machinery, and I need to ensure they get home safely every day. Safety underpins everything we do.”
